I almost spent the night at the summit of Devil's Tower!  In 1978, our group of 3 got a later than intended start and we probably wasted too much time at the summit, so when we began to rappel down, the sun was setting.  We were trying to descend with no view of what was below.  We had a little bic lighter we used to try to see where to end a rappel pitch.  Suddenly, there was brilliant light when the park service lit up the side of the tower with a spotlight.  We were so relieved we could see and they tracked us as we continued to rappel down.  By the time we made it from the tower base back to the park service office, they had already closed up, but I sure wanted to thank the ranger that helped us out.

Devil's Tower was one of the places we visited on our honeymoon in 1958. I believe it sparked the lifelong love I have for geology. Our earth is a beautiful place, full of surprises.

$50 in 1941 is equivalent to over $1,000 today. That would have been a good point to mention 🤷

Bear Butte. I don't see no devils. You can tell them by their suits.

Cool story! From Devil's Tower to Wind Cave national park to Custer state park to Badlands national park and more, there's so much to see and experience in that region of the country. You could easily spend a month there and do something different every day.
