The late Eighties Marantz CD85 and the early Nineties CD80. Both use die-cast aluminium CDM1 swing arm laser mechanisms, 16-bit 4x oversampling chips, and are built like tanks. These machines are excellent, in every way.

My Pioneer PD D9 Mark 2 player has been hammered to death. But it still plays everything thrown at it. I've had it for over 10 years.

This is a cool video, I’ve had plenty of experiences with the old JVC CD players and I can attest to the seemingly immortality of those things lol. Pretty much every one that I’ve come across have always worked, I found them at bargain basement prices be it garage sales, internet local sales, thrift stores etc. A particular sweet spot I seem to notice from the late 1980s – till about 1993/95 ish, not to say the others they came after we’re not I just had more experience in these ones from that era. Particularly the ones with the old Amber display with the black chassis, or the ones with the Amber display and the old gunmetal Grey chassis. Have had similar experiences with various Technics models as well, have had good results, even with the changers. Currently have an old top load JVC by disc changer from 1989/90 and it still goes strong paid $11 for for it at a thrift shop a couple years ago. Makes a solid backup player for the basement. I can also attach to the issues with Sony’s and many of them I’ve come across particularly in the ES models sound great but they tend not to function or work right.
