I like my water to look like tea... it has nature in it

The color in the water is usually caused by tannens. And, in some tanks your fish want them. The tetras love it.

I've kept tanks for 30 years and have always used carbon in my filter. Welcome to old school. 😁

Wow. After keeping fish, fresh & salt, for almost 60 years I could not even imagine that folks don't use charcoal filtration in their tanks. That's insane.

But aren't tannins what we need for our tanks to help our fish thrive because it provides many beneficial properties? Why would we honestly want to remove them

This works but the problem is is if you have plants. It sucks out all the food that the plants need as well. So if you use activated carbon and you wonder why you can't get plants to grow there, it is.

Aktivkohle gibt es eigentlich schon seit Jahrzehnten, wird aber immer weniger genutzt. 😉

Purigen is better and you can recharge it

I have heavily planted tanks so no need for activated charcoal. If I ever feel the need to remove tannins from my tanks, I use Purigen

Purigen. No carbon sits in my 75 gallon and the water is pristine. The answer is purigen lol.

This is a fake controversy. I have never read a how too article or book that doesn't explain why and how to use activated charcoal. That is why it is for sale with the other aquarium supplies. He even lists two of the major brands. I have known this supposed secret since I was 10 or 11 years old and I got my first 10 gallon aquarium because I read up on how to care for tropical fish.
