“I blame myself, I don’t blame Rick Ankiel.” -TLR

People that don’t know might just say that is “manager speak.” Saying what he is supposed to say not what he means. They are wrong. Tony truly meant that and repeatedly proved that over the years. He loved Rick and felt truly awful and responsible for what happened. Tony was always Rick’s biggest backer as he tried to overcome his pitching issues and Tony full heartedly supported Rick’s transition to the field. Tony’s show of emotion when Rick found success in the field was very uncharacteristic for Tony at that time. You can say a lot of negative things about TLR but I personally will always respect him for taking responsibility for Ankiel’s issues and for truly acting like a father to Rick.

Always been a fan of Ankiel as a ballplayer and a person, I've heard countless stories about the type of person he is and the character he has off the field
