Now imagine the Vikings travelled back and forth across the North Sea in longboats. No wonder they referred to them as serpents when they would twist and bend in the rough waters.

I was in British army & went on an excercise in Denmark, came back to England on a troop carrier across the North sea in a storm. About a 300M ship, as it came down off a wave the whole boat shook as it hit the water. Everybody was sea sick, worst 15 hours of my life.

As a retired merchant mariner, I once served on an ore carrier for two years in the 1970s, hauling iron ore from Narvik and Luleå to Emden, Germany. I found that the North Sea is the deadliest and most unpredictable, with numerous wrecks from World War II and oil rigs that make navigation hazardous.

Had the joy of serving in the Norwegian coast guard, sailing in the North Sea. The winter is harsh with brutal waves, but in the summer its so so peaceful. A sunrise on still water is the most beautiful thing you will ever see. Never felt as free and trapped as I did onboard that boat.

Lived along the Scottish Highlands coast most of my life, the North Sea is so wild, rough, intense, powerful, but beautiful in a way too. Always learnt to respect the sea because Mother Nature isn’t to be messed with.

"Nordsee ist Mordsee" (Northsea is Murdersea) is an old German speech about this sea.
And it's true, I served in the German Navy and once encountered an extreme storm while on board my ship. These are incredible forces of nature that can still pose a danger to even the largest and most modern ships today.

I was still a novice fresh out of training, but even the seasoned sailors felt sick at times. Eating was out of the question, if only because the cook couldn't do anything in the galley, so we had rusks and stomach-friendly tea for two days.

I’m currently on a Platform Supply Vessel in the North Sea working out of Aberdeen and have been for over a year and believe me this Sea is no joke. The storms I’ve seen here are mountainous. Way worse than anything I’ve encountered deep sea.

The first time in my life that I felt totally helpless against mother nature, was as a teenager in 1989 on a schooltrip to London from Sweden. Our ferry ended up in a storm that nobody had expected in the middle of the North Sea. It was some tense hourse during the night when nobody on that boat could sleep. People being seasick with vomiting and the crying out of fear from the kids, were heard all over the lower decks. A night I will rememember until I die.

I'm from Denmark and my granddad was a fisherman for 55yrs, in small blue tree fiishing boats. So he was a tough hard working fisher without fear. Because you dont work on the North Sea for 55yrs. He was a man of honour & courage...

I'd like to mention the Grote Mandrenke in 1362, a big storm tide that killed up to 25.000 people (even more devastating considering the lower population at the time). It caused massive land erosion, shaping many of the islands of today, and destroyed settlements and cities like Runghold.

My mother was Swedish, so we've crossed the North Sea many times. It's so unpredictable, we've had easy crossings with gentle seas, when there's an electrical storm at night it's beautiful. When the storms come it's hell, we've crossed in force 10,11 and once a force 12. That wasn't fun.
Once in a very cold winter going into Gothenburg we needed an icebreaker.
