  I&apos;ve often thought what Brian Cox says here, i.e. maybe simple life is fairly common, but complex, intelligent life is <b>much</b> rarer. Given that very simple, basic life arose very quickly after the formation of the Earth, but it took several billion years, plus a number of coincidences and specific events, for that to develop into complex intelligent life. So, maybe life as advanced as us is as rare as once in a galaxy. That would mean that we would never encounter another intelligent civilisation. Because as Cox says here, interstellar travel would be very difficult but not inconceivable, however, intergalactic travel, even for the most advance civilisation you could try and imagine, must be impossible.

  It&apos;s good to hear him say Fermi&apos;s paradox &quot;might not be a paradox&quot;. Because I don&apos;t believe it is, nor do I think it was ever intended to be.

  I&apos;ve thought for a long while that it just comes down to time. &nbsp;Over billions of years, civilizations rise and fall all over the universe all having different stages of development from one another. &nbsp;The most advanced alien civilization closest to us may have developed nuclear technology but blew themselves up 400,000 years ago, or the second closest just developed bronze tools, or just hit their Industrial Revolution with no idea who we are 22 light years away. &nbsp;That sort of thing. &nbsp;We all just miss each other by thousands of years and blink in and out without knowing who or what was/is out there.

  Another potential factor is that those civilizations have developed a means of communication well beyond anything we could detect, or maybe even conceive of...IF they are out there - in regards to the detection of other civilizations.
