I'd say head movement and distance is the king. People with no training are always head-hunting.

The elbow block is what I learned from a WW2 Marine, who just happened to be a 10th-dan in both Okinawan Karate and Judo, almost 25 years ago. While we did practice for tournament fights, we also trained for street fights.

RIP Paul Gioia. Your wisdom is missed every day.

Your own shield hitting you in the face- this is an aspect of defense that's rarely ever discussed.

I’ve trained boxing and kickboxing at a modest level and grew up in a rough environment and ended up in a few street fights. If there’s one thing that experience taught me, it’s this: Street fights are dangerous and completely unpredictable. You never know what’s coming. You can slip, lose your footing, or get blindsided. More people can jump in. Weapons can appear out of nowhere — knives, blunt objects, whatever someone has at hand. And the consequences can be life‑changing. Expect the worst and do everything you can to avoid fighting. It’s never worth the risk. A lot of people overestimate their abilities when it comes to real violence. Another thing: size does matter. If you’re up against someone heavier, stronger, and built like a tank, your odds drop fast — no matter what some “experts” like to claim.

That said, here are a few general principles I’ve learned from experience — not as instructions, but as observations:

• Breathe and keep your pulse under control. Panic is your worst enemy.
• Stay focused. Try to read the other person, move. Getting out of the way is always better than taking a hit.
• Look for openings. The sides of the head are often exposed.
• Body shots hurt. A clean shot to the midsection can change everything and are often exposed.
• Low kicks are safer than high ones. Many people stand with one leg too far forward — it becomes an easy target

There's a reason old-school boxers so heavily favored cross-guard and long-guard, they were carry-overs from eras before gloves, and when gloves were smaller and a boxing match was more like a street fight.

Bas rutten also says to avoid a high guard. He says parry, block, slip and move.

Without sounding like a complete jackass, in my younger days I were in alot of streetfights, got punched in my face alot, and very often very well deserved, and I promise all of you, if you're in a streetfight with someone who doesnt know how to fight, they will throw hooks to your head, nothing else, just keep a high guard, dont bother protecting your body, just put the guard as high as possible, and counter with straights, I promise you it will never fail you, and you will not have a scratch on your face.

The body shot is criminally underrated in a street fight. Very effective and less lethal

I love the fact you noticed that fights on the streets don’t go to the body. I sparred with my son with thin gloves only on the head to simulate a street fight amap. About a year ago he got ambushed by two guys. After 10 meters walking backwards with his hands up trying to de-escalate the situation and already receiving one punch he knocked them both down. Happy that I did practiced with him.

I don't follow any kind of MMA or boxing, so I have no idea who this man is. He is so soft spoken though, very calming to listen to. This is the Bob Ross of punching people in the dome.
