From a climbers point of view, one should harness up, tie in, jump off the boat, get drug along then get back in the boat.
PRACTICE.

I have followed John for years and have loved all of the beautiful work that he put into Far Reach. Our philosophies differ a little bit but what I would stress to any sailor is personal competencies. So whatever level of complexity you choose for your boat that you have the ability to maintain it. I spent 3 years refitting my 27' 1983 sailboat and departed for the South Pacific from the West Coast NA a week before my 69th birthday. A year and a half later I returned to my starting point having sailed more than 10,000NM all solo. I spent more than 4 months on passage and 6 months in French Polynesia and loved every minute of it. If someone took a picture of me on passage I would have been wearing a huge grin in the middle of the Pacific in 25KNs. I can't wait to do it again, I hope you will do it as well! Ben S/V DAWN

Thanks guys. As an "old" guy that wants to go sailing you've give me hope. At 71 years young I think I have the reason, i haven't left a lot of wreckage in my life, but I'm also not getting any younger. 1,000 mile motorcycle trips don't scare me so I don't think sailing will either. I guess we'll see. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

Love Johns channel and his sailing philosophy. I owned two Cape Dories in the late seventies a typhoon and a twenty five. I remember seeing the 36 at the Annapolis show when they first came out. It has been my dream boat since. Then life happens, kids, sports and all that stuff. Now at 72 I still have the desire to go offshore.

“Sailing is fixing things in exotic places” and a friend of mine who’s physically built an aluminium yacht always goes simple, because he might not be able to find parts for an electric winch in an isolated Indonesian village for example.
