We used to heat a rock on a wood stove and wrap in newspaper and place in the bed for our feet. It kept us warm most of the night.😊

I've found after using your oven keep the door closed and it keeps your house warm longer than leaving the door open.

About 6 yrs ago i had lots of bubble wrap. I watched a you tube channel and saw this guy put it over his windows. He survived high heat bills. So i tried it mysekf, guess what it works. So i put it on all my french doors.

I wear old socks with the toe part cut off and a cut in the heel for my thumb, as fingerless gloves in the house.

Wool blankets are he best and if you are lucky enough you can get them from family members who downsize or at thrift stores.
Wool can absorb a third of it's weight in water and still be warm. A wool vest can be worn over your clothes and you wont feel itchy from the wool fibers. As for the drafts under the doors, we have two samoyed dogs, they sleep at the base of the doors, no drafts and they enjoy the cold. Samoyed fur is like wool, it can be brushed, collected and made into yarn.

I live alone and am often away. At night if I feel a bit chilly I simple put on another layer, usually fleece and if necessary use a small electric heat pad at the lowest setting. Much better than heating the whole house up.

There's some good ideas here. Thank you for sharing. Like the snow shoveling, for example. The sooner you shovel snow the better. If it gets packed down by foot traffic, that turns to ice and can be a real hazard.

On closing the heat registers in a home with ducts, that seems like an easy savings plan. However, the furnace system is designed to heat those rooms. Closing off the registers in unused rooms sounds efficient, but what it does is creates back pressure and makes the furnace fan work harder, using more energy and causing parts, like the fan motor, bearings to wear prematurely, and overheating the heat exchanger.

Leave all the registers open, let the furnace do its job, and the sysyem will cost you less and last longer.
