In London the Met Police Special Escort Group (SEG) use plain white virtually - unmarked bikes. Theh have small discrete POLICE logos but from a distance these are not seen. These are used for VIP and Royal escort duties or as convoy pilot riders. Beautiful bikes. I love that BMW sound i first heard on the R80 many moons ago so one will be coming home with me one day.

Frankly I could never bring myself to get a BMW if only for the fact they are just so damn ugly. Some of the classic Beemers look nice, but the modern ones? Sorry, just can't get past that look. And that's not to mention that BMW is the pioneering brand in making it impossible to service and repair their stuff without a dealership.

I had a cheap and ratty Deauville 700 for a while and that's honestly the largest bike I'd consider owning for now. Maybe an FJR1300 some day, but definitely not right now. The Deauville was a brilliant bike, tbf, but I ended up selling it because it was just getting past it a bit. Not that it was actually near the end of its life because those things will survive the apocalypse. It was mostly just plastic bits getting a bit naff. It's a shame that economical mid-size tourers like that don't really get made anymore.

Oh dear, you are sold on them, aren't you!
For me, the most uncomfortable bike I ever owned, a dealer network more interested in coming over as superior when everything they did simply wasn't and an overall cost of ownership that outweighed every other brand I have ever owned.
Never again .....

I started back in the 80’s, my first big bike being an R100RT, ‘78 spec bike. I did many thousands of miles on that bike and if treated as a wafty tourer, it was great. Comfortable, easy to maintain at home and very reliable.

The snowflake alloy wheels were prone to cracking but mine was ok. It did get through a few front wheel bearings but other than that, I have fond memories of that bike.

More recently, I had a 1250 RTLe, which to my mind, was the best one ever made. Very reliable, smooth, rapid and economical with great handling. However, after major spinal surgery, I just didn’t want the weight any more. I changed last year to a ducati supersport 950s, and that bike is a revelation. Plush suspension , coupled with an upright riding position and superb all day comfort. It’s 50Kilos lighter and unbelievably good handling. It may lose out on horsepower but it’s actually more responsive, faster and absolutely planted in any corner at any speed . It doesn’t have the weather protection but it does a good job of keeping the worst off.

It may not have the range or luggage capacity but I use soft luggage and like to stop every few hours on a long ride anyway. I can’t see myself returning to bmw now. I enjoy the ducati far more, it doesn’t need as much man handling, is still all day comfortable and looks and sounds amazing. The irony is that had I not had spinal issues, I wouldn’t have considered one but honestly it will tour, scratch and commute all with equal aplomb.

I love this , i had st 1300 two of them did 300,000 miles between them and your comment is correct, however very smooth and better reliability, i now on my second RT 1200 and it's perfect bike but needs full service, which is normal, however St 1300 i abused it did 85000 miles with only oil change, so good bike , but i love the RT but is high maintenance bike bit brilliant

Bought my 2023 RT back in July. It’s been an awesome experience so far. Significant upgrade over Versys 1000.

I have had 3 RT,s now starting off with the 1200 2007 then updated to a twin cam in 2011 and now 2024 1250. I have sold each of these because I thought the bikes look boring and wanted something more fun. Then when I buy something that is more fun. I end up really missing the RT and buying another one. There is no other bike that has the practicality the comfort the easy handling. I really do enjoy the experience of riding this bike, it is not always obvious as to why. The bike I had before this a Ducati Multi Strada V4S and most people would wonder why I would sell that for this bike. I prefer the engine I love the fact that I don’t need a key to unlock the fuel tank or any of the panniers. I love the fact that both panniers fit the same good amount amount of luggage and don’t have an exhaust running through them. I prefer the sound of the engine. I prefer the feel of the brakes. I like the fact I can pull away from 2000 rpm. I like the fact I can get upwards of 450 km per tank and yes maybe the Ducati was technically faster but seriously I never think the RT needs any more power. It is pleasurable to up the pace on as well. Not a sports bike but gives me all the fun I actually want
