To be fair Gavin, one was stopped down and one was wide open. I think shooting at f/5.6 you'd see much less difference as both would be closer to their "optimum" aperture. That being said yes primes are generally sharper but by todays standards that doesn't mean much as both are perfectly usable for 99.9% of applications.

What is so great about a video like this is that it helps people make a decision on what might work better for them. Well done Gavin! You shared what is correct about differences between prime and zoom lenses. We have from amateur to professional photographers, people with a lot of money, people with little money, and people in the middle. You out there in YouTube land obviously know what category you fall into. Use this informative video to get the lens that you need/want. What I love about these types of YouTube videos is that 90% of the information I am well aware of already. But I love it when the 10% hits and I learn something I don't know, or forgot about. Keep them coming Gavin.

I was taught and learned on primes (a 50mm) over 25 years ago. Fell in love with them . Never looked back! Great video G man! 🎉

I think Hasselblad has some work to do on that zoom, esp. for that price. It shouldn't be that different in center sharpness on a premium modern zoom, even wide open.

As someone who adores and prefers primes, but uses zooms for landscape and travel, one thing that I was thinking while watching was that you would benefit from changing focus distances between lenses. Then you got closer, but I’m thinking to test further away because I’ve found that primes are often best at closer (portrait, for example) distances than they are at infinity, while zooms are often tuned for better performance toward infinity. This makes a difference depending on each person’s photography. You’re doing more close-up nature photography, but someone doing larger scenes focused to infinity and stopped down to 5.6-8.0 may not gain an advantage by using primes.

I did my own comparison between the 35-75mm and an XCD 45P and an XCD 65mm. I also found the primes to be sharper, though not really noticeable unless zooming to 100%. However, one of the reasons I own the X2D is to be able to crop freely to fine tune a composition, especially important if one doesn't have the exact focal length needed for a particular composition. For significant crops I want the camera to squeeze every drop of resolution and micro-contrast it can. Another surprise I had was finding that the zoom produces slightly less saturated images than the primes. I agree the zoom is good if I'm only going to be able to carry one lens, otherwise I'll be using a prime. Thanks again for the topic.

This video stared so serious, I thought Thomas Heaton must be around! But thankfully the humor started creeping out!

Keep in mind that Diffraction happens at ANY aperture. In theory the wider the aperture the sharper the lens. I'll also note that us Nikon shooters have one distinct advantage, that is the 24-120mm f4 Nikkor S, the sharpness this lens can produce at any aperture is stunning. I'll also note the f2.8 Trio is even slightly better. With Nikon this type of comparison will prove that the Zooms are so close to the Primes it's not worthy of consideration unless you want/need the narrow bokeh of the f1.2 lenses.
