This song is far more than just a light-hearted pop song. Although the pulsing synthesiser riffs initially suggest a sense of carefreeness, the lyrics explore one of the most difficult moments in human relationships: the uncertainty before commitment and the acceptance of vulnerability.

The central theme of the song is the fleeting nature of opportunity. The lead singer, Morten Harket, portrays an internal struggle where desire and fear clash. The opening lins depict the typical difficulties of getting to know someone; that situation where we search for words but cannot find them. However, this uncertainty does not lead to passivity but to action: the protagonist acknowledges his own imperfections (odds and ends), yet asks the other person to take a chance on him.

The key line of the chorus (I’ll be gone in a day or two) carries a sense of urgency. It reminds us that the moment vanishes, and if we do not dare to act, the chance for happiness may be lost forever. This line of thought culminates in the song’s core message: it is no better to be safe if it comes at the cost of missing out on life’s experiences. The lyrics encourage us to embrace stumbling and risk-taking rather than watching life pass us by from the sidelines.

Overall, Take on Me has remained timeless because it expresses a universal human emotion. It captures the longing for someone to finally ‘take us on’, flaws and all, and the realisation that life’s true values lie in moments of courage and sincere connection

There's a live, acoustic version of this decades later on YouTube.... and it's so good even when Morton is 57. And really different. A real singer's masterclass
