  📌 A quick clarification about the lyrics — “let us die” vs. “let us live”<br><br>I’ve seen several comments asking why I used “let us live to make men free” instead of “let us die to make men free.”<br><br>First, I want to clarify that I did not rewrite Julia Ward Howe’s lyrics myself. I have great respect for her original work and its historical significance.<br><br>The original 1862 publication of Battle Hymn of the Republic in The Atlantic Monthly did indeed use:<br><br>“As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free.”<br><br>You can see the original publication here:<br>The Atlantic Monthly — February 1862 (original text)<br><br>However, “let us live to make men free” is also a documented and widely published version of the hymn.   I love this version, but hate that the arranger &nbsp;changed &nbsp;the line &quot;let us die to make men free&quot; to &quot;Let us live to make men free.&quot; &nbsp;Julia Ward Howe wrote the song to be sung by men going into battle knowing that they may die. &nbsp;The song is about sacrificing one&apos;s life for a greater good.

  I have to say, my daughter just graduated from U.S. Army basic training and I couldn’t help but to hear this song in my head while her unit marched out onto the field. Thank you for this inspirational song.

  I cannot WAIT to get to my cabin loft in the Blue Ridge mountains and blast this through the PA system in my loft, along with my BIG, BAD Ludwig drum set. They will hear it for miles. <br>Hell Yea!!!!🥁🎶🎚️

  i love the civil war, i love my country, and i love these ladies&apos; voices. The music is great i listened to this maybe 50 times. And then my heart broke. What do you mean by let us LIVE &nbsp;to make men free?
