To pull off the impossible, Suleiman turned to an unlikely genius: Mimar Sinan, a former Christian; a military engineer drafted into imperial service through the devshirme. Supported by the powerful Hurrem Sultan (Roxelana), Sinan launched a structural revolution. From physically stabilizing the failing 6th-century Hagia Sophia to constructing floating grand mosques and engineering unprecedented domes, Sinan reshaped the skyline of an empire.
