Never understand when people say they don't enjoy history. How could you not.

The meaning of “Terrible” has evolved considerably since the English chose that word as the interpretation of the Russian word “Грозный.” The word more closely aligns now with our current use of “fearsome.” Words like “terrible” and “awesome” then had more to do with things that inspired divine terror and awe. Hundreds of years later, “terrible” now means “worst” or “least capable.”

Actually Vladimir was the most powerful principality of Rus when Mongols arrived, not Novgorod. Hence, the transfer of the grand prince seat in 1155 from Kiev to Vladimir.

Novgorod (although prominent throughout) plays a critical role after the mongols initial conquest, as the one part of Rus to be too far from Mongol main invasion route, be able to make a vassalage deal and thus be a rallying point to preserve Rus culture. Alexander Nevsky and posterior Novgorod emergency as a free trade city (part of Hanseatic league) all happen after mongols laid ruin to much of the Rus.

Terrible is a terrible translation of the Russian word grozny, which implies “terrible” but in the sense of “awe-inspiring” or “terrifying” rather than bad.

«Грозный» — прилагательное, образованное от слова «гроза», для лучшего понимания оригинального значения слова, можно представить человека из какой-нибудь художественной сцены, с появлением которого небо охватывают тучи с дождём, а по небу распространяются раскаты молний с громом, лицо которого сурово и под величественным взглядом которого, все опускают глаза и головы.

The nickname "Terrible" was given to him by England, in Russia it's Grozny which translates to Formidable and Fearsome, this word twisting from historians is nothing new as they often seen Rus as barbaric and dirty state.

I cannot imagine his horrible up bringing and how isolated and lonely he might have felt. Thank god I wasn’t born in his condition as I would have gone bunkers…

I'm currently reading about "IvanThe Terrible", and I disagree with that analogy. I believe he would have had some health concerns with his mental health at the time of his rein and also felt great sorrow and suffering as a result of losing his wife Anastasia etc. He was indeed in my opinion a great Zar who like all leaders at some point made some unsavoury choices and decisions. Thank you for helping me better understand the novel I'm reading about him; now I understand it much better. I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your channel that I came across today and subscribed straight away. I am an avid lover of history and I will be viewing all of your content. Finally, I have something beautifully narrated and intellectual on YouTube that I can sing my teeth into with great wonder and sheer pleasure. You, sir, are brilliant!!
