Several years ago, I was at work in Hartford, CT. Suddenly, I felt a bit of vertigo. Over the next 30 minutes, everyone was asking "Did you feel that?" Turns out, we were feeling the effects of an earthquake in Virginia!!! I'll never forget it.

Back in the 80s, I was in the chemistry building at Michigan State University in the lab, and I suddenly felt an odd little bump as if the floor had fallen a little bit. I thought to myself I must've imagined that I just didn't have enough sleep last night. But then I looked at. large bottles of colored reagents on shelves high up on the wall, and noticed that the reagent were swishing back-and-forth in the bottles! I had just moved to Michigan at the time, and did not realize that they had any faults anywhere near East Lansing. Luckily, it was just one little shock, and nothing fell, broke or spilled. I talked to the lab manager, though, and made sure that anything that could be harmful if spilled, was in a more secure place that wouldn't splash on students if a bottle fell or broke. I never forgot about this!

I was a High School senior in Olympia, Washington (USA) when we got hit with an earthquake. I was in my Home Economics class sewing, and our teacher told us to get underneath the heavy hardwood tables we sewed on. Before doing so, I leaned way across the table and grabbed my seam ripper before going underneath. Why? You tell me. My mom was home listening to a radio station from the Space Needle in Seattle. She said one of the announcers said “It’s an earthquake - I wish I were anywhere but here” (or words to that effect). As an adult I lived near Fairbanks, Alaska for 16 years and experienced tremors quite frequently, and a couple of big ones. Usually they’re over quite quickly but one I experienced in Valdez went on for some time. Just dwindled and dwindled until it finally faded away.

I had parents who grew up in the SanFrancisco Bay Area. So, as a sat on my bed doing homework and noticed the bookshelf in my room starting to bang against the wall getting louder and louder, my parents ran in telling me everything was OK. It was JUST an earthquake. 😮
It was scary and felt surreal. The whole house being shook back and forth. It lasted maybe 30 seconds. My father explained we lived near a fault and we researched it in the ways we could back in the late1960’s. I lived in Augusta , GA.
Thank goodness that because of my parents experiences in Alameda,CA they knew what it was and could calm me quickly.

😊I have felt two minor quakes in SOUTH WALES in my 76 years. On the first, I was resting the back of my head against the wall in the reception room of my solicitor when I felt a movement in the wall. I touched the wall thinking it was a drywall partition but it was solid. I asked the receptionist if she felt anything and she said no. That evening it said on the news that an earthquake took place in south wales. I hesitate to say that they said it was minor, but it was. The second time happened some 25 years later and I was lying down on a settee when I felt a ripple run through my body; like a gentle breeze blowing on the face of a pond. I instinctively knew what it was and I asked my wife in the next room if she felt the earthquake, she too hadn’t, and I replied you will hear of it on the TV tonight. She did.

We lived in CA during the '89 Loma Prieta earthquake. Our family lived in Morgan Hill, a nice little town east of the Santa Cruz Mountains where the quake was centered. I and my youngest son who was about 8 at the time were driving to the local high school to pick up one of his bigger brothers from water polo practice. All of a sudden, shortly after 5 pm, I thought there was something wrong with our Chevy Suburban car because it was shaking so badly. Then my son pointed out that a stop sign was swinging wildly back and forth. I realized it was an earthquake, stronger than I had ever felt! three of my kids were back at our house, and I felt that our neighbors would take care of them, So, I continued to the high school where I found the water splashed out of the pool onto the deck. My older son had gotten a ride. I quickly drove home, listening to the radio, hearing of all the devastation. I found the other kids and the neighbors all standing out in our cul-de-sac. The energy of the quake had travelled north to San Francisco. Our house was spared too much damage- some dishes spilled out of cabinets, bookshelves emptied onto the floor, and a few cosmetic cracks in our exterior walls. Some of the neighbors had their chimneys fall. We waited days for power and water, but we were very lucky!

I love the way you tell your stories. You’re so good at it. And you reassure us, not scare us. Thank you.
