Thanks for this story. My great grandfather came here in the 1910s paid head tax couldn’t bring other family over due to the exclusion act. He had a grocery store and lived in Strathcona. Rest of our family came here in the 70s after he passed in the 60s.

I live in Chinatown. First in 2009/2010 and now again in 2025(in the same building). I love Chinatown. A lot has changed in the years I wasn’t here. Several businesses have closed their doors. I watched as some areas went from being rebuilt and refurbished to almost ruins and now to be rebuilt again. Chinatown has so much beauty. It’s a community. The people of Chinatown have been here for generations. I wish Vancouver would step it up and help better preserve what’s already here. Instead I see complete blocks torn down and towers take over.
There are some beautiful local businesses I’ve been shopping at for years. One of which, Bamboo Village. They will be closing their doors this month. I think they deserve some attention, shine a spotlight on them before they go.
I’ve been to the Parade here a few times, great sense of celebration and pride that anyone can share.
I am not Chinese but take great pride in this neighbourhood. It’s my home.

i'm not chinese but work in china town, and although it's had a rough patch, the passion and youth has been really lifting it up lately! it's welcoming and affordable, and has a love for arts and tradition. i hope nothing but the best for this little town, and i can't wait to be part of its future

Life moves fast and there aren't a lot of great ways to stop for a short time and take in well-produced pieces of local history like this. Great work, Global and Sophie Lui!

This mini-doc was rather well done and very much enjoyed watching it. Awesome to see the younger generation embracing Chinatown and gives immense hope to overcome all adversity. ❤

Thank you for shining a light on the community that built this neighbourhood. Living in Vancouver, we should all be conscious and know what gentrification is and how it affects the elderly, businesses, culture, and DTES.

I hope they start teaching us more about Vancouver's dark history in school. It's the only way we will learn from our mistakes
Humility is the key to empathy

Thanks for the report. Brought back so many fond memories. I lived in Chinatown from Keefer Street to Campbell Ave from 1969 to '74. I had paper routes on Pender Street, down to Marco Polo's restaurant and Powell Street, the Japanese neighbourhood.
