If the strategy comes from Frankfurt or Paris, the
network comes from Frankfurt or Paris and the money comes from Frankfurt or Paris, is a state that owns the
majority still in charge of its flag carrier? Or has Portugal just found a more polite way to sell
the whole thing?

Flew on TAPs first A319 from Milan to Lisbon in 2018. Aircraft was late 97 build. What struck me were the Captain and Co Pilot wishing everyone farewell at the door with the cabin crew while disembarking. Nice touch TAP

As a Portuguese, I think you made some fair observations, and some not so fair. Transatlantic flight hasn't always been this easy, nor with soo much demand. Simply looking at the number of brazilians living in Portugal and Europe in past few years shows the increase in demand which wasn't always there. Same goes for the africa routes. Also, it's easy to look at the "prime location" but it actualy sucks in terms of running costs since, as you said, local market is small and with heavy competition with other means of transportation. That being said, you are correct that both companies are buying position more than the TAP itself. The Lisbon hub is growing and will continue to grow with the construction of the new Lisbon aeroport and the development of highspeed rail towards both Galiza and Madrid, furthering its hinterland and maybe competing slightly with Madrid (but probaly not). The fleet is also modern with efficient fuel consumption which is a plus. As for the share that its selling I think there are three main reasons: 1. yes, it's an easier way to politically sell company that means a lot to portuguese people; 2.it helps prop up share value with the company expected to perform better under any one of the two groups and 3. it gives time to show people in Portugal they the company will remain the "same" despite being sold. One point you missed, which is normal, is that a fair share of portuguese people, while being emotional about the company, are fully aware that it was propped up with public money because of political management, which has created a "just sell it" mentality, with barely anyone contesting the sale of the company (at least its partial sale). Otherwise, pretty good video with good historical context. Good job!

Lufthansa would benefit the most from acquiring TAP, as Air France-KLM already has the largest market share in South America among the three major European airline groups.

Almost all major capitals in South America and the Caribbean are served daily by either Air France or KLM, as are the overseas territories and former colonial territories of France and the Netherlands.

Where TAP has a clear advantage is in Brazil, but Air France-KLM already flies to five Brazilian cities and has a partnership with Brazilian airline GOL, providing access to a large number of domestic destinations.

Air France-KLM is also strongly represented in Africa. Air France already serves several West African countries, while KLM has an established network covering destinations in East and Southern Africa.

Therefore, I think that if Air France-KLM were to acquire TAP, there would be considerable overlap in destinations across South America and Africa. Lufthansa, on the other hand, would gain much more from TAP’s network, particularly in Brazil and Africa.

But I do think, however, that TAP would have more autonomy under Air France-KLM than under Lufthansa. Within the Lufthansa Group, Lufthansa itself really pulls the strings, whereas the relationship between Air France, KLM, Transavia, and now SAS is more balanced. Although Air France is the largest airline in the group, it does not own any of these airlines outright.

Lisbon could also serve as a strategic buffer for Paris Charles de Gaulle, just as Copenhagen is increasingly being used as an alternative hub for Amsterdam Schiphol. Schiphol is already operating close to its limits, and some KLM flights are now being transferred to SAS in Copenhagen. In that sense, TAP could provide Air France-KLM with additional capacity and a complementary hub in Lisbon, particularly for traffic between Europe, Brazil, and other Portuguese-speaking markets.

TAP has a huge amount of potential. The problem is these days you have to be part of a group. Portugal as a country is now very very popular which has helped the airline massively. Out of them I hope it goes to Air France-KLM, Portugal has a massive french connection and as a group they dont trash airlines look at Swiss Brussels and Austrian now former shell of themselves terrible service.

to be honest, i've flown with swiss, austrian, klm, lufthansa, easy, wizz, the irish (not air lingus i'm affraid), and tap, to lisbon or porto, only tap had the commander or the captain saluting passengers along with the air cabin crew... i know i am missing 40 plus different cabin crews, but on these major hubs, only tap , without knowing my past or passport, they were the most friendly crew
