Stop throwing away your 3D printer poop

A quick reminder for anyone planning to give this a go - please don't use your kitchen oven! Grab yourself a cheap, second hand one online or from a charity shop like we did. It keeps the plastic away from your food and gives you your very own dedicated recycling setup! ♻

Let us know if you have any ideas of what else we can make using waste PLA! 👇

I have been printing a lot with ASA recently, I chuck all the poop, brims, etc into a jam jar and melt it in acetone, then use the resulting gloop to “glue” parts together!

A de-burring tool would work for the edges, and I bet you could flatten the bottom by setting it atop the open panini press for a while.

I’ve tried manually recycling it last year after being inspired by your work, I tried moulding it into densely printed forms which worked really well for PLA but the time investment was not worth it. I wish I had a place to send poops sorted by material (even by color, I did that too), it could make sense at scale but not for my hobby work

I bought my second hand toaster oven over a year ago. I have a rolling cart outside next to an outlet, waiting to get to work. And just last week I got the last piece, an old blender with a glass jar so I can reduce my larger pieces of filament. I'll be recycling my waste filament very soon!

Seems like if you had enough patience, you could sort all the plastic bits by basic color groups, melt it until it’s malleable, and work it, using the gloves if course, as if it’s polymer clay. If you are fast enough, you could make cane beads or millifiori, like the hard candies that are made with hot sugar. I’d really like to see y’all try this out

Yes! I have BOXES full of waste. Can't wait to try this. Although the lo-fi vinyl crackle music in the background made me worried you had set something on fire

An alternative to cutting printer waste. Is getting some old cloth. Wrapping that around the failed print or supports. Then hammering that into smaller pieces. Its fun to do. The cloth makes sure the plastic stays contained.
Its probably faster too.

I think that is a cool recycling project with kids maybe. I'd love to see a video how you made the mould, this "blob" of a tray isn't really appealing. Would've loved to see the skull or a toy or something.
