Treasure Planet Is Better than Treasure Island

  I'm one of the lucky ones who got to see Treasure Planet as a kid and fell in love with it immediately. At the time I was too young to understand or care much about how advertising and release dates impact a movie's success and what that means for the company as a whole, so it was surprising and heartbreaking to learn when I was older that Treasure Planet had been considered a failure. You are 1000% correct to call this movie a masterpiece. It tugs at my heartstrings in a way few other Disney movies manage to, and it's criminally underrated. Here's hoping more people who missed out continue to discover what a gem Treasure Planet really is.

  Honestly I feel like Silver isn’t the real villain of the movie, like yeah, he’s a pirate captain and has to act tough to keep control on his crew, but I feel like the moments he spent with Jim are more of his true self showing up. If you want a real villain, that crab guy who killed the ship’s second in command.

  I miss when Disney made well written, heart warming, meaningful films and pushed the envelope of what was possible with animation.<br><br>I think one of my favourite parts that, unfortunately, got skipped over but shows just how clever the writing and transitions are is when Sarah is saying she misses when Jim was a kid &quot;A smiling, happy little boy holding a new pet and begging me to let him keep it.&quot; only for Delbert to open the door to the rain and thunder to show Jim carrying Billy Bones. &nbsp;Flawless set up and pay off.

  A common criticism about this film that always annoyed me is complaints about Jim being a typical angsty teenager.<br>But that&apos;s the entire point of Jim&apos;s character, that he starts off as a moody and directionless teenager, who then becomes better as he&apos;s able to prove himself and given the advice that he&apos;s always needed to hear. It&apos;d be like complaining that Tony Stark starts off as a selfish asshole, even though the entire point of his arc is him becoming a better person.<br>If Jim was a well-adjusted teenager or wide-eyed youth, the relationship with Silver wouldn&apos;t work nearly as well, especially that speech Silver gives to Jim, and stuff like the betrayal wouldn&apos;t have the same impact either.

  “This film is a masterpiece, and I will die on this hill.” Same. So much. Loved it from the moment I saw it in theaters as a kid. I was obsessed with the story and the art and characters, the music too. When I bought my PS2, I bought the Treasure Planet game to go with it. I listened to the soundtrack constantly. It’s been one of my topmost favorite Disney films ever since. And I still get emotional. It’s good to hear other people talk about how much they love it too.

  &quot;I hope I&apos;m there. Catching some of the light coming off you on that day.&quot; This quote by Silver to Jim brings tears to my eyes. It&apos;s something you want to hear someone say to you and something you want to be able to say to others.

  Note taken: Silver is the pinnacle of the Magnificent Bastard trope. And has an arm that makes me think they specifically hired a respectable mechanical engineer for him to figure out how the arm would work.

  I lost my dad at 15, at 21 I started working at my local deli, a year in I met a man around 58, he understood me, he has been very funny, patient, and has been through a lot in his life, he is definitely a father I needed in my life, and he honestly looks at me as a son. I never thought I would see myself so much like Jim so many years later in life.

  The thought that this movie was ever considered a &quot;failure&quot; has boggled my mind for many years. Everyone I have ever spoken to about this movie who has seen it has absolutely loved it. &nbsp;<br><br>Every. Single. One. &nbsp;<br><br>And the idea that it somehow flopped at the box office on release never made any sense to me either. Until you explained what was most likely Disney&apos;s &quot;practices&quot;. &nbsp;Seeing what they&apos;re like now that I&apos;m an adult and the decisions they&apos;ve made over the last ten-ish years non of this surprises me either, but it does explain A LOT of confusion I had.

  I&apos;d like to point out that at the beginning, Jim is pretty much suffering from not having a father.<br><br>But what is the film&apos;s solution to that?<br><br>It is not literally having gotten a <b>replacement</b> father. The clumsy doctor pretty much proposed that to Jim&apos;s mother, who shot down <b>that</b> solution pretty much almost immediately.<br><br>Jim instead went out into the world, following a map literally only he himself could read, and eventually bonded with an expert in the field that was exactly what Jim wanted to become - a spacer.<br><br>However, Jim&apos;s solution is also <b>not</b> found in the <b>relationship</b> with this new-found father figure. At the end of the movie, he and Silver have parted ways, and the chance that Silver - a hunted pirate - is going to play <b>any</b> stable role in the life of the now-law-abiding Jim Hawkins is pretty much zero.<br><br>So what is Jim&apos;s solution?<br><br>Having become a man.<br><br>Only with Silver&apos;s help, of course. He could not have done it by himself.<br>But it was Jim who decided to set out, on an adventure, and it was Jim that was open to any opportunity that came his way.<br><br>That&apos;s a life lesson right there, gentlemen.
