Just want to clarify the comment about Jax being a high school bully is not to excuse her behavior, as a lot of it is in fact abusive, but more so people understand the type of thing she did, as bad as it was, would mean so many people from our day to day lives are unforgivable if we are to believe she is. I also wish I'd touched more on Jax's mom emotional incest with Jax (am thinking of making another video on TADC so maybe I still will) and how that colors her every interaction, especially with how she worries Ribbit will use it against her so pushes her away, also driving her to abstraction in the process. It's a very interesting dynamic in regards to how Jax's mind works, especially if you compare her to Ragatha and her own relationship with her mom. Anyway, I hope you all get what I meant with all this, I wasn't trying to say Jax didn't do bad or abusive things.

My takeaway from the finale is that sometimes your situations can’t be changed, but you can still make the most of it no matter what. If you get caught up in all the awful things you can’t change, in all the things that that you wish were true but can objectively never be, it will kill you. Jax’s story spoke to me personally. She’s someone who doesn’t think herself worthy of anyone’s affection, who sees herself as the worst person possible who will inevitably harm others no matter what, and so to prevent herself being rejected, to prevent others getting close to her and to make sure no one suspects her of having g any weaker/softer events she goes out of her way to behave in awful ways. Jax’s character, completely unironically, convinced me to keep going. People are interpreting her behaviour in the worst way possible, because she’s a realistic abuser with realistic motivations. She doesn’t behave like an evil monster, she behaves like the worst person you know. What people miss, is that the reason she’s like that stems directly from fear and trauma and internalised hatred. Which happens to real people. Experiencing trauma and feeling like you have to hide from everyone can make people really difficult to be around. Being depressed and suicidal can make someone really difficult to be around. We know she wasn’t always like this too, with her flashback segment. But of course, this has to be taken as “Gooseworks enjoys harm to women” or “TADC justifies abuse” because no one can possibly understand any nuance ever or possibly realise that sometimes bad people aren’t just evil for the sake of it.

as someone who watched the whole thing for the first time as a binge right before the finale, i think it was very cohesive. The ending was bittersweet, yeah. but warm.

Despite how grossly this fanbase has treated Goose, I kind of hope this acts as a growing pain in this generation's approach to internet media (probably not tho lol). So many online here jumped to their 'death of the author' type takes, as you point out. This might also perhaps be a lesson for new creators learning what the right distance from the discourse is.

thanks for putting all that into words!  i was definitely judging jax more harshly because of the general fandom take, and the cartoon violence thing is just.  taken too seriously.  there IS this moment when she empties the clip into ragatha that is in fact sincerely disturbing and clearly coming from a place of deep anger channeled into violence, which is completely explained by jax later speaking to ribbit about her fears that she feels that kind of anger and she's more like her dad than she wants to be.  that whole subject is so intense and complicated and it's so incredible to me that goose kept it consistent.  but anyway all i'm saying with that is there's a distinction between "lol bs cartoon violence" and "actual for real serious business violence" even in the show. there's also something so genius about expressing jax as a purple rabbit in a pink jumper, with both considered pretty feminine colors, and then behaving like a bugs bunny role, and yet objecting so completely to the crossdressing angle that bugs never minds.  it's so telling.  literally all jax is missing IS a pink bow or some long eyelashes to be understood as a girl in this context, ribbit and gangle and pomni are all just as flat. i agree on the abstraction point as well, and the idea of it being a suicide also fits with the way abstractions interact with the other characters.  the pain you feel when you commit suicide doesn't leave with you, it stays and it hurts everyone around you, maybe enough to cause them to follow your example, until it leaves the bright harsh light of recent loss and enters the peaceful dark of acceptance. anyway didn't mean to go on, this video has given me a lot of thoughts and made me reassess.

I think the struggle with seeing Jax as "irredeemable" and "deserving of abstraction" is a combination of being conditioned to see death as  the "ultimate form of redemption", and the lack of time we are given to reflect on Jaxs point of view prior to abstraction. Because we get this information so late in the game, we don't get a chance to sit with it, to absorb it. And we are never shown Jax wrestling with the harm he does to others, or expressing a desire to want to do better, even when the others graciously offer the chance. And so the conditioning of modern media kicks in,  and death becomes the last path to true "redemption", because all is forgiven in death. To be clear, this is a horrible narrative, and it deserves to be called out as lazy and harmful writing. I will also say it's slightly disingenuous to equate what Jax does to the other circus members as being the equivalent of a high school bully, or to call criticism of the harm done as being a simple unwillingness to engage with slapstick humor. We are told the characters feel pain. We are shown in Gangle and Zoobles conversation during episode 6 that not only is Gangle terrified of Jax encacting "painful" retribution for her defiance, but that her sense of self has been deeply damaged by what Jax does to her. She says that it doesn't feel like she is even a person, but rather a playtoy, an object that Jax can torture on a whim.

Honestly, the best interpretation of the finale. This episode motivated me to be a bit more open with my gender identity. I can't end up like Jax.

Now that the show is gone, I’ve been creating a lot of “mental fanfics” involving scenarios where Jax manages to avoid the abstraction, or that they find a way to bring the abstracted ones back… However as someone who also loves creating actual stories, I also recognize that there is a huge gap between these mind fanfics that we tell to ourselves just for the fun of it, and what a good story actually needs. So even though I’d be really happy if Pomni managed to save Jax, I am very aware that the way the show ended was way better for its own narrative and message.

I always had this idea that as the characters' real life bodies were unconscious, there was some type of machine that is also speeding up their brain functions. Like imagine if their brains go into "Flash time" upon entering the digital circus, so a couple minutes in real life makes a whole year in the digital world. And that explains why no one has come looking for them and why they haven't starved to death. I feel like that would've been cool, but what we got was okay too.

I'm not trans nor I know much about the subject. When I see tras in media, its either stereotype, making fun of it or it being the greatest and being told if you hate that character you are a transfobic. I may not know how it feels to be a tras person in either way, but watching the show, it made me understand Jax a lot more. It was a neat experience to witness and make sense of everything after seeing jax being trans. Not gonna lie, I didn't get that she was trans at first (or whatever may other queer term that could apply to jax too) when I watched it on the movie theater. I only noticed it after rewatching,and after watching videos talking about it, and it now makes sense to me.   Though I will say this:  Jax struggling with identity, and being made fun of it by her mother, and Jax having forced huge expectations of an identity that she was clearly not confortable with, I can understand that part of being forced to act as someone who you aren't, and worse is being pressured by a loving figure; a lot of people can relate to that part.
