She gets to be open and public with her love for him, something Ilya really cant have without huge consequences

  asian-american here i actually really love your commentary on how the microaggressions against shane are written. you&apos;re so right about how pervasive but almost unnoticeable they can be. i was really happy with the way they were used in a way that means a white viewer might forget or not even register that they&apos;re there, but for viewers of color its always an underlying understanding that shane IS being discriminated against differently from ilya isnt and how that informs so much of why shane is so deeply anxious in a way that causes friction between them. <br><br>as far as i know, the racism is almost all new to the show. the discussions ive heard in the fandom have left me with the impression that shane&apos;s race was kind of an afterthought of the writer, so it makes me glad to see the show addressing it, however mild it is. i just REALLY hope that in season 2 shane gets to actually talk about it, or be defended from it by someone (though that could get white-savior-y if done wrong...), bc otherwise a lot of people might end the series never realizing the racism was there at all. im so so excited for how theyre going to handle it and ive actually got really high hopes based on what the show already gives us!! and again im so glad u took the time to talk about it a lot of reactors ive seen have skipped over it as a topic<br><br>ALSO while the ginger ale vs beer thing is a metaphor for his being closeted + his autism, i think its might be a nod to the fact that a little over a third of east asian people are allergic to alcohol! ig the better word is intolerant? but many of us have bad physical reactions and turn brighttt red. so i actually prefer ginger ale, too!

  The Shane freakout was directly triggered by the fact that Ilya called him &apos;Shane&apos; instead of Hollander and he said &apos;Ilya&apos; back; they&apos;d never done that before. I find it interesting how Shane&apos;s denied ginger ale at multiple points throughout the ep, with his mom even saying he can do without one and then he gets with Rose and asks for a beer himself. The only place where he got what he wanted was at Ilya&apos;s, who noticed his preferences and got it for him unprompted :(
