The guy playing Kwon(Brandon H. Lee) is actually a true martial artist. He is a Taekwondo master, a 5th Degree Black Belt,  and has won at the international level. Dude is a beast.

I think the Miyagi stuff ties back to Julie Pierce grandfather. Miyagi mentioned that he was close with her grandfather in The Next Karate Kid movie.  In the movie they explained that Julie's grandfather saved Miyagi's life during the war and in return Miyagi taught him Karate. Also in that movie Julie's family referred to him as "Keisuke Miyagi" not Nariyoshi Miyagi.  So the guy who runs that boxing gym must be related to Julie

I absolutely love the addition of Kwon in this season. He feels like a true old school Karate Kid villain. In the show most of the "villains" have been the adult legacy characters so it's cool to see someone who will pose a genuine threats to the kids like Daniel's villains in the movies.

I think the point of the miyagi stuff is to show daniel that he in fact wasn't some perfect guy and to really show daniel to find his own path. Because to this point daniel does everything based on what he thinks Mr. Miyagi would want.

The difference for me with what they are doing with Miyagi is that whatever he did  or didn’t do was when he was young.  That doesn’t change who we knew him as, as an older man and in fact led to him becoming the man we all loved. The movies all give little nuggets of info about him that give the Show Runners room to work with. And they love this show, the movies and the characters. They aren’t about to ruin anything like Disney did to Luke. Luke on the flip side we saw him pretty great as a young man and they ruined him as an old man, then he died.

It was young Miyagi I believe, so he was still close to his warrior days. The man was probably more aggressive in the past, and that's probably why he's so kind in his recent days.

No one is destroying Miyagi's legacy. They're just revealing more information about him. It's interesting. A person can't be perfect.

Truthfully I think this reveal could actually heavily help build the backstory to Miyagi. Remember, Miyagi served in WW2 on behalf of the United States while the country put his family in internment (his wife and child passing away in it). And talking to combat veterans who’ve combat back after seeing war and combat many hold quite the anger in them and while they do settle back into society, it takes em time, many talk about literally going out looking for fights, just looking to put that anger and fight away in them. So, coming back from WW2 as a young man, facing discrimination and hardship after his family and assets would have been seized, learning his with and child are dead… I can see a very young Miyagi turning to small bits of petty crime to get by initially after the war (I can also potentially see him maybe stealing that necklace I’d say a internment guard and we learn said jewellery was his wife’s that she had but lost for us to find it was taken by one of the guards). And I can see Miyagi turning to stuff like boxing and Karate as a way to let out that fight over time under new leadership and teachings. And becoming the old and wise man we knew. It would also make for an extremely good learning story for Daniel too when it comes to Johnny. Even now Daniel struggles to let Johnny be more than the bad boy from his past. Well, to learn that someone he idolises has a somewhat sketchy past and became the sweet old man he knew… well what interesting circumstances can help to change Jonny in his life too? Say a new child coming along? A loving family and new home… a change in priorities. He’ll still be Johnny but at the same time, if Miyagi can go from a man on the low with a sketchy past to the good man Daniel saw… maybe Johnny can too.

Keisuke Miyagi was Mr. Miyagi’s name in the Hilary Swank movie so my guess is that she will show up and shed some light on this.

How could you laugh at mentioning Lethal Weapon 2 but completely miss Daniel with the "I'm getting too old for this shit".  Funniest line of the whole episode!
