  Pacific Rim gets ten times funnier when you realize the Kaiju showed up expecting a normal planetary conquest and instead got jumped by skyscraper‑sized luchadors. Humanity really said ‘no guns, only suplexes’ and the Precursors never emotionally recovered.

  The reason why they engaged in hand to hand combat is because shooting the kaiju while effective spilled lots of &quot;kaiju blue&quot; (monster blood) which is toxic to everything on earth, they realised that blunt force trauma and cauterising blades were way more effective at killing kaiju while limiting the amount of kaiju blue spilt into the oceans.

  The only reason the kaiju show up in waves is due to the time moving differently on the other side of the portal. Gravity in various parts of the universe changes how time flow, and the precursors had to slowly adjust how time was moving so it matched on both sides. To them. They were likely sending as many kaiju as possible though the portal as the could. One after the other side every few minutes. And then suddenly about 15 minutes into the invasion. A robot falls back through the portal and nukes their faces.

  According to lore the humanity fend off the first ever kaiju using tactical nukes. The precursor overmind must have be wondering why such powerful and unfair weaponry was not used since then.
