Great video and information. I’m sure no expert but I think I would always try to save a tree like the one you were showing us. You and your family are working hard. Stay after it and good luck.

I’ll always try to save any of our chestnut trees,👍I use cages& tri stakes driven firmly at least 2 ft. Into the ground. We all learn from our mistakes, hang in there mate.regards from🇦🇺.

That and we don't plant in poor ground. We cleared a wooded area then planted
Give them what they want

Little more expensive but we're trying to grow trees so we're buying wooden slat snow fence plus 2 - 6 foot t-post to hold fence. Diameter 3-4 foot round. And stick brush around fence to push deer further away from eating tops. Unless you want bushes. Need at least 2 post for winds. 1 for tubes ok but after couple years your going to have to switch over

Our issue is the deer eat the tops off chestnut as they come out the top

I use tubes and rebar stakes i just drove mine farther in the ground then yall did. Then when my trees got tall and lanky and flimzy i used like a 10' piece of pvc slide over the rebar to support the tree and after a year or 2 the trunk was able to support its self. Just mt experience but may help yall too.

I'm trying to figure out when is the right time to lose the tree tubes. The earliest time but not too early is the short, unhelpful version. Once the leader has some branches above the top, is there much point keeping the tube? If rabbits chew bark in the winter, would chopping the tube to 2 foot be enough?

Trees like the one at 4:21 can be easily saved. Remove all the fruit. Remove the tube. Tie towards the top, but leave enough give that the tree can sway in the wind. That will allow it to put energy into strengthening. The tubes are only meant to force upward growth and expedite the canopy development. Once canopy branches have a nice spread above the tube, it's time for the tube to be retired/relocated to another sapling in need. A good, healthy tree still needs the trunk to breathe and strengthen to hold its own weight. :)

When I has small Pecan trees at our original place, i never placed tubes around them and I used a t-post and rope to straighten trees up with. Thanks for sharing and let’s head to the next one. 13:57
