Brassicas are a broad species Matt.

If targeting deer for late season, I'd stick to all purple top turnips / kale. Skip the radishes and dwarf essex rape.

If you are dry during August, try a longer maturing variety brassica like kale or sugar beets. Or you can try the traditional brassica blend of radishes, turnips, and canola in mid to late July at a lower rate so they have more room to expand. Overseed any bare spots with rye.

I’m in northern MN as well. Northern Roseau county to be specific and I’ve had really good luck with the Frigid Forage products which come out of Bemidji. Good folks to deal with. Specifically myself and a buddy have had excellent results with their “Big and Beasty” brassica blend. This year I planted on June 30th and didn’t get rain until July 16th. Had about 10% germination until after the rain mid July. Surprisingly the seeds were just lying there and I’d say about 85% the remainder germinated and too off. With that being said, I do have some lighter soil in portions of that plot and I agree, the brassicas do not do as well there vs. the heavy clay which is most prevalent here. Like you, I ended up top seeding cereal rye in there to fill in the gaps AND take the pressure off the brassicas that are doing well.👍🏻👍🏻

Southern Canada on , Vermont border pretty much 5mins .
Khale, purple top turnips, tilled radish and another forage radish , with annual clover mixed around 40% . Also some adjacent late planted grains, rye and possibly oats . Seems to work well they hit the clover MOSTLY at first then transition to brassica.
Also and a kill plot 75 yards in from the main plot with a clover & chicory mix they love to hit first. It’s not a miracle set , but seems to work here .

I would try big boost brassica from whitetail habitat solutions blend. Good early mid and late. And plant oats peas clover etc next to it so they have something to eat besides the brassica. Deer in my area of southwest wisconsin didn’t touch my brassica till late season with the oats peas wheat next to it.

Eastern side of Northern Minnesota. We plant brassicas and they do good In Our soil if it gets rain which it did not this year. Filling in the gaps in the plots with winter rye heavily this year. On a good year the brassicas last till mid November then only bulbs and rye left for the deer after greens of brassicas are gone.

Hey I have the same soil, maybe even worse. I do cereal grains as well. But I have had good luck with northwoods whitetails seed company’s fall forage sandy soil blend. It’s a seed variety specifically designed for sandy soil. It has winter rye, forage oats, buckwheat, and a believe forage peas. Grows very well in my poor soil. I usually add winter rye to it besides what’s in the blend and crimson clover as well. I have a question for you. When you plant your grains with clover, how many years will you let the clover grow before starting over with a new planting of grains and clovers? And during the years that the clover is growing, do you add anything to it in the fall?
