Honestly Soda Pop despite it's bubblegum sound is quite sinister lyrically when you think about how it's a metaphor for their need to drink and consume human souls. 😅 So while sonically it's a departure from Your Idol, thematically it's pretty on par, just their ultimate intentions are more overt in Your Idol.

The way it goes from "don't you know I'm here to save you" to "no one is coming to save you" is...*chef's kiss*

I dunno if this has been mentioned but you know how Celine taught Huntrix "we are hunters, voices strong. Our faults and fears must never be seen"
Then a line in Your Idol goes
"Don't let it show, keep it all inside
The pain and the shame, keep it outta sight
Your obsession feeds our connection
이 순간 give me all your attention"
Like what the Huntrix was doing was actually feeding the demons.

He didnt sell his soul for his talent. He sold his soul to MAKE IT. Like, he was good, but he was just one of the many talented people, unnoticed.

What I love about so much of the lyrics in this movie is that it's usually more layers to it. Like Takedown at first is just a distrack against demons, but when they flip it around towards Rumi, you realize that ooohh, that's why she didn't like it, because it also describes her, or at least the way she was raised to view that part of herself. And Soda pop is this as well! At first glanze it's just a bubbly pop song, but when you think about the lyrics, they are actually singing about "drinking" peoples souls right from the start. "You're all I can think of, every time I drink up." And "wanna taste every drop". It goes from cute to horrifying really fast then. It's so clever and I love it!

4:12 There’s a theory going around that actually makes a lot of sense here, and it has to do with both historical context and the way “deal with the devil” type stories usually work.

First, during the Joseon era in Korea (which is when Jinu’s flashback takes place 400 years ago), if the king “invited” you to be a court musician, it was actually a direct order. You couldn’t refuse it, because saying no could mean death for you and your family, as well as extreme dishonor. Court musicians were not nobles or high-ranking people — they were employees of the palace. They lived inside or near the palace grounds, but they could not bring their families to live with them. Inside the palace, only the royal family, the highest nobility, and certain top officials were allowed to have their families.

That’s why, when we see in the flashback that Jinu walks in and his family is left outside, it’s very possible that he thought they could come with him and only learned at that moment that they couldn’t. The scene is ambiguous, but historically, this situation would make perfect sense.

Second, when it comes to the deal with Gwi-ma (the king of demons in the movie, who plays the role of the “devil”), there’s a classic storytelling pattern: the devil grants you what you wish for, but with a hidden cost or in a way you didn’t expect. Jinu wanted to escape poverty and succeed as a musician… and he did. His music was praised, even by the king, who brought him into the palace. But the “trap” was that, in the real context of that time, it meant being separated from his family.

And about the idea that “Jinu was handsome and could have made a living doing something else” — in that historical context, being good-looking didn’t really help men, especially from very poor families. For women, beauty could sometimes lead to positions like court entertainers or courtesans, but for men in extreme poverty (like Jinu describes, with his family having nothing to eat), looks alone wouldn’t have opened doors.

So in the end, he may have “saved” only himself — but not necessarily because he wanted to abandon them. The reality of the time simply didn’t give him another choice.

According to Maggie Kang, the creator, Rumi is supposed to be 24 while Mira and Zoey are respectively 23, 22 in that order. Maggie wanted to start the movie at Huntrx peak (as in they've already won a lot of awards) rather than create an origin story where they're a lot younger.

CORRECTION EDIT: yeah just looked at the subreddit AMA again and Maggie does say Rumi is 6 months older than Mira (23/24). Zoey 22/23.

Based on some of the glimpses that he gives of his past, he had his sisters hand. He was trying to bring her into the palace. He didnt let go until spears were pointed at her and his mom, and by the look on his face, he didnt expect it. I believe he fully thought that he was going to bring his family with him to the palace and provide for them. Gwi-ma has him convinced that he intentionally left them behind and all their suffering is his fault and he has internalized that.

One tiny detail I love in this song is the skipped beat in the last "Listen cause i'm preaching to the choir", where in the rest of the song it went "listen cause I'm (pause) preaching to the choir. It's such a tiny change on the last sone but as a listener it feels like being shoved forward, which is exactly what you're supposed to be feeling in that moment. The situation is escalating, it's out of control, you're on the train and there's no getting off now

4:25 At that time, face card does not matter if you're a man and you're dirt poor.
It isnt like today that a photographer or an idol agent can make you an instant celebrity.
It was all calling on the devil back then. 😂

Hooray! You've now watched the movie, so glad to hear this as I was probably one of the people shouting at the screen on your previous reactions to these songs, which were interesting but you were missing the context
