<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHT1vkYrDHw&t=887">14:47</a> reminds of rule 3 of the USMC rules to gun fighting “Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice, ammo is cheap my life is valuable”

Fun fact: the all dark blue scheme is how she got the nickname "Black Dragon"

Ryan, Can you confirm the New Jersey's 16-inch guns are capable of hitting Colmar from her current location in the river? There's a car repair shop there that's unscrupulous. When can volunteers test this capability? Thanks in advance.

The black smoke is from fuel, oil, and munitions burning/exploding. The white "smoke" is mostly steam - indicative of catastrophic damage to her propulsion plant and/or seawater ingressing into her engineering spaces and reacting violently with her boilers.

From the Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries: <br>Maxim 37 - "There is no 'overkill,' only 'open fire' and 'reload'."<br>Maxim 46 - "Do not try to save money by conserving ammunition."<br><br>That being said, there are good reasons to save the big guns for potential big targets.

She was saving up for a duel with Yamato. She should definitely have saved her 16 inch ammunition.

I was fortunate to wreck dive in Chuuk on a number of the wrecks sunk by air power from Operation Hailstone within the atoll. It was an awesome and somber experience.

My Dad served on the seaplane tender USS Currituck and his battle station was as part of the crew of one of the 5 inch guns she carried. When he spoke of those guns, his eyes lit up with a sense of pride at what they could do. Not to knock the 16-inch guns, but the American 5-inch was among the best dual purpose guns of the war, and it was my Dad's. I see no issue with using it for what it was designed to do.

Pictures and film from WWII is so amazing, but almost always shows the human fog of war. Lots of sunken ships found are not near where either the US or Japanese reported them. Sometimes the 2 accounts vary wildly from each other. I've been on the USS Lexington in Corpus Chrisit at least 10 times. As they opened more and more of the ship up to tours, as you down to the engineering spaces and engine room, you have to stop and imagine being that time & place. 18 year old kids, in the middle of an ocean and hot AF and more than likely in the event of a big attach, no way to get out and escape a sinking ship. This truly was the greatest generation. I can't see any generation ever matching their selfless sacrifice or bravery unless we ever are attacked by aliens. No way wars between nations are fought like this ever again. First sign of real trouble, off go the nukes.
