The Essex was knocked down in part because she was carrying more sail than was prudent for the conditions. Studding sails were not typically used by whaling ships.

I strongly recommend the book "In the Heart of the Sea" by Nathaniel Philbrick about this event. It's a very well-written, intense, and gripping story. There's a movie of the same name starring Chris Hemsworth but the movie does not do the book justice. Skip the movie and read the book. I'm tellin' you... It really does come down to choices. Extreme, dire, and literally life and death choices.

Wonderful details I never knew. Great story of survival, man will do anything to exist. The phycological trauma to these survivors would have been unimaginable , what a burden.
