Another important part of the episode: when Worf defends Picard during the final hearing, Sabin uses Worf's heritage against him, saying that the son of a traitor should not be allowed to serve on the Enterprise. This despite Worf working for Sabin and Satie, and both of them singing his praises a few scenes earlier. Once Worf was no longer useful to them, Sabin turned on him, and used prejudice as his weapon. Working for Fascists does not secure you in-group status. They will use you, then turn on you.

'Mister Worf, villains who twirl their moustaches are easy to spot. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well camouflaged' Probably his most memorable line

I watched this as a kid and it always bothered me. It was too real. I was just old enough to understand this didn't need spaceships and phasers. The thing that rattled young me the most was Worf saying that the crewman invoking his right to remain silent was confirmation of his guilt. The older I get, the more this episode makes me uncomfortable, which I believe was the point.

One of my favorite quotes of Picard is from S2 E21 “Peak Performance”. Picard tells Data who lost to Kolrami and lost his confidence: “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.”

Even as a teen watching this when it came out, that "Have you completely recovered from your experience with the Borg?" made me so damn angry.

This episode and The Measure of a Man are perfect exemples of why 30 years later TNG is still fresh and enjoyable. Very cool analysis as always 👏

Picards speech to O'Brien in "the wounded". when one was been angry for a very long time, one gets used to it. and it becomes comfortable like old leather. and finally, it becomes so familiar, one cannot ever remember feeling any 0ther way....its about hate.

"you dirty his name when you speak it" is such a twisted, bitter line. She delivered it perfectly.

Satie's fond recollection of dinner time verbal fencing with her siblings, under the watchful eye of her father, stayed with me. She didn't place the emphasis on how the discussions helped her and her brothers arrive at greater understanding, her emphasis was that she won many of those discussions and enjoyed her father's validation.

What I love about ‘The Drumhead’ is that Satie isn’t irredeemably evil. She sincerely wants to preserve the safety of the Federation. She isn’t power-hungry, she isn’t a spy covering her own tracks, she is just a person doing what she believes is right. That’s what makes her so terrifying at the end. She allows her desire to protect the Federation and uphold her father’s legacy to blind her to the reasons those are worth protecting in the first place. So much of science fiction tries to terrify with inhuman monsters, but here the monster is terrifying because she is all too human. There’s a Satie in all of us, and we must be careful to not allow ourselves to become her.
