i don't have a BACKUP COMMANDER. i don't "build a COHESIVE DECK". i don't play STAX PIECES. i build around a guy that LOOKS COOL, and if it gets removed, then i DON'T WIN.

edit: for clarity, this is a reference to the "I don't have a secondary" meme

I noted to a friend that his decks seemed to stumble if his commander wasn't on the board and his face looked like he'd left the oven on.
A couple of weeks later he (jokingly) mentioned that the comment had broken his brain. Every single one of his commanders was an enabler and he had just never noticed.

Pro tip for Kaalia brewers: make your deck with a Reanimator subtheme. It fills a similar role to Kaalia, acts as sideways ramp, and helps you recover from board wipes.

One thing I would add, is ask yourself "if I cannot access my commander in a game, what does my deck do?" And if the answer is "nothing", "very little", etc., you probably have a glass cannon and are setting yourself up for more polarizing games. I always joke that "I value being able to actually play every game of magic", so I play more lands/draw and goldfish without access to my commander to ensure I can still play and win. With that being said, I still build my decks around their commanders, it is just an extra measure to ensure that when things are not going according to plan I can still stand a chance.

There's a reason why Kaalia of the Vast is the most featured commander in the Am I the Bolas series on EDHRec.

The ceiling and the floor is something that you need to look at for not just your Commander, but every card in your deck

Jodah is literally 2 legendary slivers stitched togeter with all instances if slivers being exchanged for legends.

IDK about Gishath. Pretty sure he just says look at the top 7 cards of your library, then put them all on the bottom

This is exactly why to took my Jodah The Unifier deck apart. Your either made a huge unbeatable board or your opponents consistently and mercilessly removed Jodah every time he entered. Very unfun play patterns

One day I'll find the fast, resilient, midrange deck that has interaction and protection. One day...

I don't mind playing glass cannon commanders, I do run a protection pack in those decks. But the best part of it all is the big boom, we don't always need win but we did " do the thing".

I like to think of a commander as the garnish on a fancy drink. It draws your attention to the theme, makes you interested in the drink, but if the drink is terrible then the garnish is pointless. You need a good drink like you need a good deck to make the most of both the commander and the garnish.
