  The narrative describes an advanced design, but the pictures show that they never even reached the point where they figured out that the valve train should be enclosed...

  A fitting memorial to this event was produced by Brock Yates, a writer, (among other things), for the magazine "Car & Driver" in the 1970"s, called the "Cannonball Baker "From Sea to Sea Memorial Dash". The eventual all-time record, I believe, is some 31 hours and 4 minutes, set in 2006.

  My great great uncle worked there in the 1920's ! My mother always talked about the great franklin car ! Also i'm from and in syracuse New York ! Right now ! So thanks ! Brings back memories !

  I have always been quite fond of the Franklin design philosophy. Got me interested in air cooled engines from an early age.

  They made very good aircraft engines, many years ago I owned a 220 HP Franklin engine it was a very smoth runing engine

  The Volkswagen beetle and Combi proved that air cooling works well. I owned one in 1967. It was one of the best cars I ever had.
