Russia was very scary even back then. They were known as Russian Empire at that time. Basically Russia but with the size and population of the Soviet Union. The main reason Russia even went to war with Japan was because the Tsar thought it would be an easy victory to boost his reputation that was tanking at home.

USA opened up Japan 1. for economic reasons, was a big trading opportunity, and good location to refuel, repair trading and whaling ships, but 2. Japan was INSANELY strict about being closed and would execute foreign shipwrecked sailors, the other countries had to sail far out the way just to avoid Japan, it was a nuisance, all the other countries were tired of it. Japan also refused to let any of their own lost sailors return for fear of them bringing back foreign ideas or religions. This extreme isolation went on for a couple hundred years and when the USA showed up with advanced warships, Japan realized it was way behind in technology so they quickly brought in American and Europeans to help modernize so they didn't end up being colonized by technically advanced foreigners. And they drastically advanced, becoming a notable world power in only a few decades.

Japan did some pretty horrific stuff in WW2. They also believed they are racially superior and should dictate the others how to... well, everything, basically. Their hatred was unleashed in Korea and China in full force. There's a lot of documentaries on this subject, it's just typically overshadowed by nazi Germany most of the time.)

Let's put it this way; War can lead to atrocities being committed within the chaos. These kinds of atrocities are what lead to the creation of the Geneva Convention making war crimes highly punishable if you're caught doing it. What Japan did is very much up there to what Germany was known for doing during that time.

The biggest difference today is Germany's government to this day is VERY apologetic of what their country did, while Japan's government chooses to deny/ignore their past sins... while neighboring countries are STILL extremely sour towards them about it because they refused to apologize.
Also, the old Rising Sun flag to those same neighboring countries is how the west feels when we see Germany's WW2 symbol.

In WW2 Japan and Germany was basically neck and neck on the most horrific atrocities to ever be committed. A hardline German Party member that was stationed in Nanjing China was so horrified by the atrocities that he created a safe zone for the Chinese to flee to. He wore the armband, and cover the place with German Party flags to deter the Japanese soldiers from bombing the place and actively stopped them from entering.

WW2 Japan Unit 731, it's absolutely insane and disgusting. The US basically pardoned/rug swept it in exchange for the research. It's an interesting but harrowing read/vid watch

(copy-pasting something i posted on another reaction video)
This video only mentions buddhism for religions in Japan, and it made me interested in how faith/tradition developed in that country. I went to the library and found Shinto: World Religions by Paula R Hartz. It was very interesting. Here's an excerpt about varying influences over the years:

---

Shinto and the Religions of China
For the Japanese, Taoism's appeal lay in its appreciation of nature and its many deities, closely paralleling Shinto beliefs, and from it they took its practices of divining the future. Confucianism stressed respect for ancestors and order, which had been Shinto ideals, but it had evolved into an orderly bureaucratic system of government that was practical and efficient. The Japanese eventually adopted this Confucian model and incorporated it into their Shinto system, along with its code of ethics. Buddhism had many aspects in common with Shinto, but it offered more color and ceremony as well as philosophical depth, and had wide appeal for Shinto followers.

---

Apparently buddhist and shinto worship was more or less interchangable for a long time, until the Meiji restoration when shinto was put back on a pedestal because of its emphasis on the divinity of the emperor.
