Heartbreak was the story of Lazlo, a womanizing rogue. He got into various, sitcom situations as he pursued women and avoided husbands. It was a screwball comedy with a twisty plot. Boswell did a one-off strip with a character he created but hadn’t used: Reid Fleming. So, for one week in June of 1978, instead of Heartbreak Comics, the Georgia Straight ran Reid Fleming, the world’s toughest milkman. According to Boswell, there was a fair amount of reader feedback. So, a few months later he put Heartbreak aside and focused entirely on Reid. He continued with the character until 1979. Then he took a break from the weekly strip to produce a comic book based on Heartbreak. However, things didn’t go as planned. Boswell believed, since he had the Heartbreak story done, that redrawing the strip would take a matter of months. But it took a lot longer. In fact, it took him over three years to finish it. Since Heartbreak was taking forever, Boswell decided to take the Reid Fleming strips, reformat them for a comic book and print a single issue. This would give him a little extra income to survive while he finished Heartbreak. And Reid was easier to produce because it wasn’t as labour intensive as Heartbreak. So, in 1980, Boswell printed ten thousand copies of Reid Fleming number one. Then he looked for a distributor. Which is, literally, the perfectly wrong approach to self-publishing. You find a distributor first, then print what’s needed, with a little extra for reorders. Luckily, someone at Last Gasp, a notable underground publisher, with an established distribution network, saw Reid Fleming and ordered five hundred copies. Then they ordered more. Thousands more. Boswell had to do another printing to keep up with demand. Finally, in 1984, Boswell finished and printed Heartbreak Comics. This complete story had a version of Reid Fleming as a supporting character. He was very similar to the better known version, but not quite. He’s more restrained and a patsy, I guess you could say. Two years later, in 1986, Boswell signed with Eclipse Comics for an ongoing Reid Fleming series. The word ongoing being in air quotes. Eclipse would print five issues, but they were published almost annually. These five issues make up one complete story: Rogue To Riches. It’s this run that most people are likely familiar with, if they’ve heard of the character at all.
