Ray grew up in a small town in Georgia where the main radio station was country so that was mostly what he listened to. So he had a good grounding in and appreciation of country music when he recorded this breakthough album of country music.

Your comment about the "crying" in his voice is spot-on. However, my favorite example for Ray is "You Don't Know Me", that song just breaks your heart.

So, back when I was a kid (late 1960's-1970's), very poor, so I dug through trash cans for recyclables (to redeem for cash) this song, and others like it blared from the jukeboxes of bars-a very depressing time. In the late 1960's over 90% of radio stations were still country. Imagine if there was a youtube back then and more than 90% of the videos were Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Dolly Paton.

Maggie-Great reaction . A terrific song by Ray would be his duet with Johnny Mathis on the song “ Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.Ray ask Ed Johnny to sing the song at his funeral service ,which Johnny did before a star - studded audience!!
