Dunne's "evolution of MMP" story treats the 30% ceiling as almost inevitable and system-driven, but the Key/Ardern era shows charismatic leadership alone can blow straight through that ceiling — which means today's numbers may say more about weak leadership on both sides than about MMP itself maturing. Key was 40-47% & Ardern even hit 50% in 2020. Hipkins & Luxon both have low likeability numbers. Nobody wants to sit down and have a beer with either leader

The most earnestly and determinedly full of shit politician in NZ’s recent history. To me, he’ll always be the party pill guy.

King Maker is an uniquely NZ thing that the media has decided to make the focal point of elections, when in reality it barely happens and is just part of the MMP system which by all standards of measurement is one of the best systems in the world for governance. People saying MMP is bad are just conflating issues that the coalition are having to the system of governance when in reality its issues cause by a weak National party not being able to control ACT and NZ First constant outbursts and nonsense to get media coverage. The point of a coalition is there is things you agree on and things you don't and you compromise, but compromise is impossible when you have two party leaders acting like children and a 3rd with no parenting skills.

ACT and NZ first have no interest in meaningful political conversation outside of what they want to achieve and National are happy to push through as much as possible regardless of the consequences as long as its 'not something labour would do'

Or maybe the dinosaur parties have succumbed to social and environmental realities and outdated economic models.

The NZ Herald a few weeks ago outrageously predicted TOP could be the king makers. TOP are now bubbling under 3% and that's probably where they will be at election time.

Dunne has had a snitcher against Labour ever since Jacinda's wave tossed him out - or would have , if his fragile ego hadn't caused him to toss in the towel prior to the election ..
