Thank you for this conversation. I’m 58yo gay man, came out in the late 80s and I know I have a lot of trauma and PTSD from all that our generation went through. Please keep these conversations going. 👍🏻☮️❤️🌈

Guys , you’ve really hit a raw nerve here .
Layers of trauma is a good way of putting it .
For me it was sexual abuse as a boy of seven from a young macho family friend ( straight) .
A lot of homophobia in my teens . Gender dysphoria in my 20s , diagnosed HIV at age 22 .
Alcoholism in my late 20s .
The gay community can be very toxic let’s face it .
It’s only as an older man that I’ve found some peace of mind, I’m sobar , I keep very fit .
I work with animals which is so healing.
I still have love and compassion in my heart for others which I’m very proud of .
Thank you for tackling this subject.

I'm 56 & a San Francisco native. In the 70's & 80's the only part of San Francisco that was excepting of gays was the Castro, Polk Street, & SOMA. Those multi generational ethnic working class districts like the Excelsior, Portola, & Sunset were extremely homophobic. Definitely the trauma started as a young boy. All the other kids, adults, & teachers knew I was gay. I was a marked boy for the bullies, be they my peers or the adults. By the time I was 12, I was in full drug addict mode. Self medication & it saved my life. At least while I was high, I could be comfortable. Then, in my early 20's I got clean & sober. The trauma now I experience is all from the gay community itself. The constant message we get as gay men from other gay men is the unapologetic rejection of not being young, rich, good looking, successful, ect. enough. The superficial standard of desirability has become excessively high. I think I look good(not perfect), have a fun career, & am outgoing, yet I feel invisible. Strangely, I usually have a stronger social connection with straight men.

Thanks yet again...this episode really rang true with me and my childhood. PTSD reflects all that I went through, starting as a very young child...

After 20 years living in metro NYC and at the age of 50, every single gay man I've met in Missouri has some degree of PTSD. I haven't met one who doesn't have real issues. I like my job but I can see I won't be having much of a personal life here.

This (inherent PTSD) is THE most overlooked aspect of being a gay guy. (I'm 55 y/o)

I’m so pleased you are bringing light to the generational trauma many of us live with today. 6 years ago, I was diagnosed with severe PTSD as a result of two consecutive workplace shootings. My recovery has been complicated by the complex trauma I suffered as a survivor of the AIDS pandemic, being openly gay during the early 1980s, and injuries I suffered as a child.

What is not widely known is that extended or frequent trauma causes physical damage to the brain and central nervous system. PTSD often presents as depression, anxiety, irritability and rage, but the underlying causes are largely neurological. None of this is your fault. It is also treatable.

The way forward is by loving ourselves even when others do not. This means seeking help through an appropriate mix of therapy, medication, and emotional support from our peers. We can’t undo the past but we can live better quality lives as we age.

I was born in the late '70's. I think it's important to remember that each age group went through something different yet no matter what there was a negative effect. For me, I was not in my sexaul prime since I was too young and didn't have friends that passed away from Aids. Instead, I didn't come out because of the media attention and people in my environment talking poorly about homosexuals (church, school, etc.) as I was trying to navigate my own attraction for the same sex. I recall thinking "I better not say how I am."

I'm 65 in August (born 1961). When going through my medical records at the start of COVID, March 2020, found that I had been diagnosed with cPTSD in 2018 and started treatment and now, for the first time in my life I'm live as my out, authentic self and moving from 'survivor' to thriving.

I cant imagine getting mad at a little boy for playing with barbie dolls but I know people do it. Someone in my ex's fam yelled at and made their son do push ups for playing with a baby doll.
