I drive an old corvette in Texas. But suddenly I find myself wanting to save pound sterling, slam a fish and chips, and ride an E-bike through London.

Winter commuting is the pits.
If you are going to commute, get a scooter. 125 if you never go faster than 40-50 or a 300 if you do motorway.
Scooters have better weather protection especially the maxis.
Get bar end muffs and a good pair of insulated trousers and you are laughing.

But remember, it will take you 10 mins to get ready whilst car colleagues dash off.

Also, I recommend an airbag vest as apparently biggest cause of death to motorcyclists is internal organ damage.
£500 for helite/motoair

Great video 👏 I used to commute on a 125cc around London. Best decision I ever made. The tube at rush hour was hell on earth and took twice as long 🫠

RE: risk factor. I only have US numbers (which I do believe are across the board worse than UK numbers), but stateside here if you do three simple things:
1) don't speed excessively
2) wear a helmet
3) don't ride drunk
Then your risk factor gets down to or under that of a car. If you live somewhere (like the UK I believe) that lane splitting/filtering is legal, that risk gets even smaller.
Taking a course as you mentioned is another bonus, especially if you take more advanced courses over time - thus mitigating the chance of being one of the numerous single-vehicle-accidents that fill out motorcycle crash stats.

This isn't to say "oh well bikes are perfectly safe then!" but more that the actual risk is significantly smaller than many would think, because the stats are overwhelmingly populated by people that brought their own demise upon themselves. If you're a competent rider without a deathwish, the stats are on your side. There is still the reality, however, that if you are in an accident, it's gonna suck a lot more. That risk will never go away, so do your own research, and decide what's acceptable to you.

Same with bicycles we can split between commuter and fun:
A sport, cruiser or tourer is not great for commuting financially.

Many 125cc mpg is 120!
I have a 650cc sport adventure with 65mpg and I use it for everything. I understand why many say a 350cc is enough and are a good all rounder.

And you can forget to take an electric motorbike for a daily ride... (yet)
But love when car drivers come with the "what if you want to travel around europe in a hurricane while transporting a piano"
Yeah... The average joe commutes 30 miles... And as many average, the data pool includes people who drive for a living.
Obviously if youre a self employed plumber or a builder, dont change to a motorbike.
But if you dont plan to do adventure rides a 125cc is an ideal option.

Shopping?
Well... home deliveries. Not takeway. For small shops im sure you can get delivery rucksacks (or just ask a local delivery rider for one, im sure they have plenty spare since they get one for each app they register for)
And big bulky shopping can be done by your local grocery orderer.

The BIG NEGATIVE you did not mentioned:
BIKE THEFT!
Its practically decriminalized. Police dont even bother if your bike is stolen. If its stolen at a railway station, you can even forget that they will even bother to open a case.
Theft prevention gears are limited. Even diamond security locks are good against an angle grinder for like 15 minutes, and 2-3 strong man can lift the bike up to a van or a trunk of a car (yes... those happen too)
Its pure victimblame: "your fault for being an easy target"
I did not had a year without theft attempt. The record was 8 attempt in a single year!
If you live in a big city: "its part of the city life"
If you live in a rural area: "police dont have the specialized training to handle bike thieves"

This limits the moving to places where you can secure it:
street parking is too risky. Need at least a garden where you can set up anchor locks or a security shed.
And a workplace with security present or offering restricted entry even to car park.

But I still pick the motorbike!

This has always been a huge reason why I ride and no one ever understands it. Even other motorcyclists, most people seem to think the only reason you would ride is for pleasure. The amount of times i talk about fuel economy to blank faces, its so confusing to me

For my winter commuter I ride a Duke 200. It's awesome and is Interstate capable. $4100 out the door new and it's incredibly cheap to insure and maintain. I tell people all the time that motorcycling can be very cheap or very expensive depending on what you do.

I've had 7 bikes total and for sure will have more, but the Duke has a permanent spot in the stable.

I commute to work on my Honda Monkey, the time saving alone cutting through traffic is priceless! I have a silly gas guzzler 4x4 for weekends and camping so the fuel saving just using my bike to go to work is also a big win!

it's more expensive because of the gear, bike, insurance, add-ons, CBT, training course, tests/exams etc. Thankfully it gets cheaper after all of that is done. Not to mention much higher theft risks, time taken to get ready, and weather difficulties.
