Why I’m Obsessed With The Meze 105 Silva | Gear Review

It's been four months since the Meze 105 Silva landed on my desk, and I still think about them almost every day. This is the most obsessive headphone I've owned in years — and at $499, I need to tell you exactly who they're for. What We Cover: • Why Meze's published 5Hz–30kHz spec is basically meaningless — and what actually matters (impedance, sensitivity) • Build quality: walnut ear cups, fully user-serviceable hardware, 50mm biocellulose composite driver with a titanium-coated torus • Amp pairing — from a cell phone to a full desktop DAC/amp stack • How these make digital recordings sound analog, almost like vinyl • Treble, percussion, and soundstage, tested against Rush's “Soliloquy” • Midrange — why these were basically built for rock guitar and vocals • Bass character, tested against Kyuss and Beware of Gods • Where these fall short, and who should (and shouldn't) spend $499 Chapters 00:00 Intro — Living With the 105 Silva for 4 Months 00:22 Build & Materials: Walnut, User-Serviceable Design 01:08 Biocellulose Diaphragm & Titanium-Coated Torus 01:47 Why “5Hz–30kHz” Specs Are Meaningless 02:14 Impedance & Sensitivity (42Ω / 112dB) 02:38 Amp Pairing: Phone, iPad, MacBook & Desktop Rig 05:04 Sound Signature: Not Neutral, Not Audiophile 06:21 Making Digital Sound Like Vinyl 07:18 Treble & Sibilance 08:24 Percussion & Soundstage Presentation 09:56 Rush “Soliloquy” — 3D Imaging Test 12:02 Midrange: Rock Guitar & Vocals 13:05 Classic Rock Test: Rush & Aerosmith 13:55 The Stoner Doom / Heavy Underground Connection 14:20 Bass: 99 Classics vs. 99 Neo, Kyuss Test Track 15:55 Sub-Bass Test: Beware of Gods 18:09 Where These Fall Short & Price vs. Value 20:41 Final Verdict — Who Should Buy These 21:54 Comments, the 109 Pro & Channel Update Torture Test Tracks: • Rush – “Soliloquy” (2112) • Kyuss – “Gardenia” (Welcome to Sky Valley) • Wasteland Haze – Lone Star https://wastelandhaze.bandcamp.com/al... • Beware of Gods – “Upon Whom the Last Light Descends, Part 3” https://bewareofgods.bandcamp.com/alb... • Aerosmith – Get Your Wings • Elder – Through Zero : https://beholdtheelder.bandcamp.com/a...
