"How profoundly exhausting to watch humanity spend centuries evolving past war and disease, only to reach the stars and decide that the pinnacle of narrative expression is ... puppets?" - Q

As an older watcher of Star Trek I found a different sub message. Just because you are not in a body that does what it once could doesn't mean you can't find your strengths and do things now. We can't kick butt with our fists anymore but we can still get it done.

I must admit, the episode was silly to me, in a kind of fun way but still silly. However, after hearing you explane the episode, I am understanding the bigger implications. Thank you.

tbh puppet enterprise crew are so cute a puppet, especially the engineer lady with the curly yellow hair, she was so cute with the curly hair and the big eyes.

First, I don’t think any of the “gimmick” episodes were bad – I’ve loved them all. But more specifically about this one, I first thought it the end was a bit of a let down, but then realized (as well) that it was Spock processing his life. Also, I find it funny that Spock’s subconcious thinks everyone around him is a muppet (small M, as in the British slang). All the traits that are ascribed to the puppet versions are what Spock really thinks of the real people.

Pelia the puppet was hilarious. Her puppet eyes and hair was mindbogglingly zany

Yes, exactly, so here's my take on it: I've done my share of criticizing the lates editions of Star Trek. However--I thought the premise of this one was to explore Spock's mental state, including his logic and how it combines with his emotionality as part of being human. It was in the dream state that this exploration occurred. I'm a psychologist and consider that premise highly reasonable (if not "logical"?). There is a term in psychoanalysis about dreams that is "daily residue." It's when things in daily life show up in some form in dreams during sleep later in the night. Spock's "daily residue" was Ricky. Many critics entirely miss this point about the dream experienced by Spock. It's actually highly psychoanalytically sophisticated. I also thought the episode (surprisingly) cute and funny, BTW.

I went in assuming I’d think it was dumb. I laughed, I said hell yeah, and at the end it flooded into place. I really enjoyed it so much. Also Carol Kane should send in this reel for Emmy consideration.

They didn't spend six months on a puppet episode to have a character beat that they could have achieved in an infinite number of ways. They spent six months on a puppet episode because they wanted to make a puppet episode. I think at this part of the show's run the main motivation for anything they do is to do what they will personally have fun doing. They're amusing themselves, it's not about the story or the audience.

I first saw you talking about Lanterns, but my gosh I now have to rewatch the things you’ve talked about previously. This was extremely informing and I loved every bit of this.

this episode was so much fun -- I absolutely LOVED it -- I couldn't help but thing about DC Follies and all the Jim Henson creations I grew up with and cherish -- clearly there hand is in this.

I'm glad the creatives for the Pike led series are well...creative -- the one before it with the vacation planet -- who would have though Federation higher ups would have condoned such a vacation -- but again...they think out of the box and come up with unusual concepts -- I look forward to every episode...like the one where everyone HAD to sing -- truly funny -- their take on Schmigadoon -- keep it coming, trek world.:face-red-heart-shape:
