Thank you for showing homeowners how NOT to get gouged by crappy contractors.

Prior to purchasing my first home with AC, the inspector noted short cycling of the system & an HVAC guy recharged the freon.

Fast Forward to July, I'm in COVID quarantine & had to call out another HVAC when the house was 85 degrees at 9am in Arizona, with water running down the front face of the unit. Dude just said it needed freon & recharged it. I then had to badger him to look inside the condenser & inspect the filter. He begrudgingly did that after I opened the panel myself, saying everything was fine based on his visual inspection.

The AC worked for about a day before the water leak began anew & the house a furnace. After a bit of research, I checked the condenser coils & pan for holes. All seemed fine. The pan was overflowing & thought it must be the drain, which was a wild mess of 90 degree angles of 1/2" pipe. I finally saw the cap at the top that you mentioned. I popped it off, then used the only "snake" available, a dryer vent pipe cleanout brush. Shockingly, the bristles folded back enough to fit in the drain at both ends. I then used the hose jet sprayer on low pressure. When I went outside, there was a huge pile of what looked like rusty turds at the outlet. The system worked effortlessly for the next two years til I sold the home.

PS If your dryer isn't drying, check your vent. My ex was ready to buy a new dryer until I found the entire pipe clogged floor to roof. If you're reasonably handy & safe, please do home maintenance yourself.

Every six months 1. Attach shop vac to drain line coming from condenser coil (before transfer pump) to remove any standing water/gunk. 2. Pour distilled white vinegar into the transfer pump (if you have one) until the pump turns on. The vinegar prevents the build up of algae in the discharge line to the outside.

Thanks for the links especially the funnel! I bought my house 16 years ago and every six months I put bleach in the pipe and let it set for only 3 or 4 minutes, then flush it thoroughly with warm tap water. I've never had a problem in 16 years.

the DIY approach here is legit for a basic condensate drain clog, and the vacuum + snake combo is solid advice. that said, if you clear the drain and the AC still isn't cooling right, or if you open the coil access panel and the coil itself looks like it's caked in debris, that's a different problem. dirty coils kill efficiency fast and aren't really a shop-vac fix. if you're not sure what you're dealing with after the DIY attempt, getting a professional diagnosis before anything else breaks is worth it. ARS/Rescue Rooter is one option to check for a diagnostic visit, though fees and availability depend on your area. always ask what specifically they found before approving any repair.

This should be required viewing for new homeowners... I just came back from a 3 week vacation and my AC wouldn't come on (the house was 90). Turned out this drain was blocked. I did this (sucked it out with my shopvac) and it fixed it... I'm going to go get a snake (and some more vinegar).

Happens in your car also. If you ever had a wet passenger side floorboard, your AC drain line needs blown out.

Thank you for the informative video. I have never had these problems until I moved to Florida, I have not been so good about rinsing it out every month, so then I am outside in the dark trying to suck it out. I just had an acid treatment by my HVAC company and he did a great clean out. But, now I am going to start using your strategies, especially the tablets, my HVAC company charges a pretty penny for those, now I have a source! You are a great teacher!
