  Personally, I don&apos;t think modern antagonists are &quot;soft&quot;, but I think modern stories seem to focus too much on the &quot;morally grey&quot; trope. Older stories focused more on the &quot;irredeemable evil&quot; trope. I think people just want an antagonist who isn&apos;t &quot;a person who had a bad day, so they can be saved if they are shown the light&quot;.

  Yes. It’s why people love Jack from Puss. He was irredeemably evil and accepted that he was and it made him such a fun villain that people love.

  I think a good villain is a reflection of the protagonist in some way. And not all antagonists have to be evil.<br><br>Edit: Mixed up villain and antagonist

  As a writer, I have villains that get reformed, villains that are sympathetic, and villains that are unforgivable, and there is a true balance of each

  YES! We don’t get enough villains that are meant to be hated ! I’m not saying that all villains have to be evil, but if all of them are just misunderstood… then what’s really the point…?

  Making a villain sympathetic isnt necessarily a bad thing, but a lot of well written sympathetic villains are the ones who are so far in the wrong and commit to that decision. Being able to relate to the villain should not excuse that they have made a bad decision and they should rightly be brought to justice for it.<br><br>Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2 is a good example. He wanted to avoid a destined death, and was bittered that his decision broke his family apart; but he did not relent on his conquest of China. He was too far gone and even when Po showed him mercy he kept going until he destroyed himself.

  Real issues is these newer modern villains in animations, film/television aren&apos;t even that bad to even be considered evil. They all now need a deeper meaning/reasoning for theirs actions rather than just we want to. And while that isn&apos;t a bad thing if theirs whole motivation is center around that rather than wanting something more like powers or control or to prove they&apos;re greater than everyone, that&apos;s not a villain, that&apos;s just a misunderstood individual.

  I feel like it falls to “following popular trends.” If studios weren’t so tight fisted, they’d allow more artists to have better variety.

  As someone who watches a lot of INDIE games and shows, villains from there don’t have this problem.
