I think that porch swings and wrap around porches used to be much more popular in the US prior to air conditioning being common. It allowed you to sit outside and catch any possible breezes. It also allowed you to sit around and chat easily with anyone passing by prior to cars.

Most newer homes don't have much of a front porch. As front porches have generally shrunk in size on a lot of new homes, that means less space for a porch swing. In four homes that my family has lived in, two had front porches and they were built in the early 1900s. The other homes were built in the 1980s and 1990s and didnt have room for even a rocking chair.

I have a ceiling fan in my living room that also has a light fixture, and not only do I forget how many times to pull the string, I also forget which one controls the light vs the fan. I've lived here over 5 years.

Texas here. We have ceiling fans in every room except the bathrooms. Those have exhaust fans. We also have a heat pump. It serves as both AC and heat. Being in Texas means the AC is used more than heat. Ceiling fans can help cool a room as well as help warm a room. It depends on the direction of the fan blade rotation. Our also has a speed control operated by pulling a chain. There are 3 speeds: slow, medium and high. It can also turn the fan on or off. We always have our fans running. It helps circulate the air so the AC doesn't have to work so hard. It saves on electricity.

From what I know the UK doesn't get much snow. Snow falls mostly in the Scottish Highlands. It is rare for England to get snow. They get too much rain for snow to accumulate. It often turns to sleet or slush. It has moderate temps due to the Gulf Stream but it is wet.

Most homes have ice makers in our freezers that constantly makes ice cubes automatically. Bagged ice is usually to fill a cooler to go camping or tailgating.

Tanks in the US depending up which area you live in we have two methods for Cooling your home. Air-condition which uses the principle of removing the humidity which thus lowers the temperature. If you live in a desert or arid region another machine is what's know as a Swamp Cooler. which uses water evaporation to reduce the heat. Just another rabbit hole for you. I enjoy your vids keep after it! Current live in Colorado which is arid. We started with swamp coolers because the cost of running one was way cheaper the AC 40 years ago. Now we have central HVAC which does both cooling in Summer and Heating in winter.

Porches and decks are two different things. A large porch (with either a wooden or a concrete floor) has a ceiling above it, and if you have one, it's normally in the front. A small porch has a concrete floor, and it's just a small area by the door (no ceiling). A wooden deck has no ceiling above it, and if you have one, it's normally in the back. Having both, you're ready for mild weather or hot weather (whether you want the sun or you don't).

He's showing a window air-conditioner. Only blows cold air. I have central air-conditioning, it blows cold when set for ac and heat for winter. I'm in Michigan and I use it a lot in summer due to the high humidity. My house is well insulated and don't run it all the time. Never lived in a house with overhead fans.

Hey New Zealand, that's an air conditioner only! We have furnaces for heating! My air conditioner is a window unit and I only need to use it a few times every summer, Michigan isn't normally that hot! Also mine runs quietly, that one must be old and about to die! We have a porch swing and also a swing set for the grandchildren! Deb

2:59 Hi, medium, low and off and that string will eventually break. You are only pulling 2” of chain

And you can reverse the blade depending on the season
