  sorry everyone, squall is still a jerk in the japanese version. <br><br>&apos;whatever&apos; was overused as a generic fill in for the english translation but the things squall says in the original japanese dialogue have similar meaning. instead of &apos;whatever&apos;, he does say things like &apos;my bad&apos; &apos;excuse me&apos; and &apos;sorry&apos; but he doesnt mean them genuinely. squall says those lines in a sarcastic/condescending way. ya, its technically different than his constant whatever tagline, but his original lines have a similar dismissive tone. the context of how squall says those lines in japanese was mistranslated and then spread online as squall not being as much of a dick but thats just not the case. <br><br>this is basically what squall means when he says things like &apos;excuse me&apos; in japanese <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mwwdsUt_HI">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mwwdsUt_HI</a><br><br>some of the other &apos;whatever&apos; translations were more passive and less dismissive. he says things along the lines of &apos;meh&apos; or &apos;what can you do about it?&apos; with these, whatever is still kind of an accurate translation. <br><br>since translating games was significantly more difficult back in the late 90s than it is today, the team saved time by changing squalls snarky remarks to the more uniform line of &apos;whatever.&apos; <br><br>pinning this since theres been a few comments about the subject and a couple people then deleted their comments after i replied with this.

  One thing I&apos;ll mention is that not all the early foreshadowing is found in the desk terminal but there is also the tutorial section of the main menu, by going into &apos;info&apos; there is an early version of the datalog that explains some of the terms and gives more information on some of the names and places. This information gets updated as the game goes on but right from the very beginning it explains that monsters come from the moon. It also has other interesting titbits like how Rinoas&apos;s mother Julia was killed in a car crash when Rinoa was young.

  A small thing about Rinoa hiring SEED: iirc she couldn&apos;t pay much. Cid sent Squall&apos;s team to help her out of pity, not because she could pay well.

  I forgot that they didn&apos;t do the greatest job upscaling the backgrounds in this port. The pre-rendered backgrounds kind of clash with those cleaner looking character models now.

Ultimecia could&apos;ve knew that Ellone would go to Space, because it already happened, and she could get the info that she went to space during that time. and since the past is unchangeable, as Ellone herself realized, its certain information that she went to space, and these type of space stations have tight documentation of who goes in and who goes out. Where Ultimecia learned that? i don&apos;t effing know.

  I think this is the best video I&apos;ve ever seen on this game. Like, it&apos;s so nice to hear &quot;if this ticked you off/you lost interest here, it&apos;s okay; the game does a poor job at this point/thing&quot; that I&apos;m willing to hear counter arguments to how I feel.

  Just finished FF8, and although I was completely fucking lost on Ultimecia&apos;s motivations and everything that happened with the Lunatic Pandora, your plot synopsis and bringing up of the Garden computer information and translation issues made it make so much sense!! Which is amazing because I already loved the game even without completely understanding the more out of left field portions of Disc 3 and 4. Really appreciate the retelling as well as the dissection of what was good and bad about it. Looking forward to seeing more videos if you do them! Will be looking at your previous videos now too!
