It's always blown my mind how there is no inbetween FINAL FANTASY VI and VII. It was such a HUGE leap!

I think it’s also important to mention how big the years 1997 was for JRGS breaking the us. It’s crazy within the span of 2 years pokemon and FF7 broke new grounds for the genre in the US

I love old footage of behind the scenes of beloved 90s pieces of entertainment (movies, games etc). It just feels magical.

The decision to make FF7 a 3D game changed the history of video games forever! As a kid I was SO blown away at how 3D and real these graphics were. It had to best story I had ever played/read/watched…amazing battle/materia system and a gorgeous soundtrack. I can’t even imagine FF7 being 2D…

I remember that FFVII was one of very few games that actually had television commercials in Europe at the time.

So they really did put a lot of effort into marketing.

Some missed early development facts, particularly about Cloud's "split personality":
One of FF7's proposed scripts was an early script for Xenogears before it was rejected for being "too dark for a fantasy" and eventually becoming it's own IP. Tetsuya Takahashi's involvement in FF7 before he left the team to work on what would become Xenogears influenced both Cloud's character and the concept of Shinra. This is why there are similarities between Cloud Strife and Fei Fong Wong as well as Shinra and Solaris.

You can read about this in an interview that's been preserved and translated on the "Xenogears and Xenosaga Study Guide" blogspot site.
"
Interviewer: Seeing the ideas behind the protagonist, Fei, don't they look similar to Cloud from Final Fantasy VII?

Takahashi: Regarding the ideas behind Fei, what became their foundation was a protagonist concept which I submitted in the early days of Final Fantasy VII's development. It was a protagonist who had been administered a mock personality, who breaks away from a society subjected to tight control, and goes on to live an adventure in the world of genesis. Nevertheless, Fei ultimately became an entirely different character from Cloud.
"

"
Regarding the lore of the technological civilization that had originally been conceptualized for Final Fantasy, one part of it went into "Shinra" from Final Fantasy VII, while in Xenogears, it was sublimated into "The Holy Empire of Solaris."
"

Final Fantasy VII is what got me into RPG's in the first place.

I remember my first attempt at a playthrough.

How I would give characters funny names because as a gamer I simply wasn't familiar with the RPG concept.

It was only as the game progressed that I went "Holy crap! This actually has a very deep story and I CARE about characters!"

It was very hard to progress in the game though, in the sense of figuring out where to go and what key items was needed so it took a few years longer and a second playthrough (with character names kept as is) until I eventually completed it.

The final scenes of the game just had me marvelled and were a bit of a tearjerker because I had spent so much time with these characters and their journey that it felt a bit sad that it was coming to an end.

The President Shinra music playing behind Yamauchi's tight-fisted handling of Square is just... 🤌🏼
