Amateur isn't a harsh word, it just means 'for the love'. I'm an amateur at most of my creative pursuits. I certainly don't get paid for all the music I make, I do it because I love it.

I’ve been playing guitar for 45 years now. I was the KING of gripping the guitar too tightly. It was like I was trying to crush an old tin can (the old real tin cans!) it throws the guitar out of tune, your hand gets tired so you fatigue quickly, you can’t move freely up and down the neck… etc. The man is absolutely correct! Relax! Touch it like it’s your woman. ( that’s why BB’s guitar was named Lucille and not Bob!). She just likes it better. Great call Nick!

"I've been playing lead guitar for 40 years, entirely self-taught — I never had the chance to take lessons, especially in the beginning. This video is an exceptionally good source of information, even for beginners! The part where you compare a guitar solo to a singer's phrasing — letting the guitar 'breathe' — was especially insightful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing this!"

I started a one man show using backing tracks when gigs were getting a bit slow for the band and it showed up how shit my timing was ( my vibrato and bends were actually not too bad ) the experience really tightened up my playing and it allowed me to not be pushed or pulled by the rhythm section in the band.
Backing tracks also prevents you running away or rambling , you can play improvised solos, BUT they have to fit the template.
My playing has developed more over this last 5 years than any other period over the past 50 years.

Trained keyboardist here and a self-taught guitarist. Somewhere I encountered what was supposed to be advice for all musicians: 'Think like a horn player' which jives nicely with your advice to 'Play like a vocalist.' Thanks for the confirmation on that!

Hi Nicky, I'm almost 72 now! I love how you dig in to things like this. Everything you talked about today is dead on. Too heavy of a fretting hand!!! Thirds!!!!
I've talked to people until they''re sick of me talking about thirds.(one luthier actually told me that maybe I just didn't like the way thirds sound) :face-orange-biting-nails:I put an Earvana nut on a Strat many years ago and that fixed the problem, until I wore it out. Shorter scale Gibsons are the worst at this. So now I've got Buzz Feiten on both my electrics. Super.........nor more sharp thirds. My acoustics are a different problem, Larivee D70 and a 1972 Guild D50 (yes I bought it new). The only people of doing Buzz Feiten on acoustics reside on one coast or the other. I typically use a variation of the James Taylor tuning method for those and it does get close.
By the way I've been guilty of everything you said not to do in this video. It's really great when someone like you just says........... don't do that. Love it.

Just discovered your channel, Mr. V! Totally dig it, & you…
I played geetar a bunch as a teenager and young adult- gave it up for 35+ years. Picked it up again, three years ago; never, ever, ever should’ve put it down. So, in playing catch-up and being from a very analog and resource-challenging era, I find channels like yours, greatly beneficial. Thank you, from the bottom string of my heart. 🤘😆🤘

Playing with Motown records is really good advice. Ive been playing in a Motown cover band for the last five years and my rhythm playing has improved tremendously.

Ages ago, longer than I want to admit as I was learning to play with my nephew on rhythm and buddy from high school on bass…nobody wanted to sing. Not to mention dirt poor, no p.a. Mics, Etc. So in order to have a structure I would try to play the lead vocalist’s melody on guitar. That lead to learning by necessity how to phrase, bend and be melodic before i could play a bunch of licks. Thats still my go to when it’s time to play lead on something that doesn’t have a signature lick or lead line especially when I’m playing or writing something new. The human voice vs a blizzard of notes or what I used to call guitar gymnastics appeals to me more than ‘too many notes for the royal ear my dear Mozart’…always loved that line😅
