  It's scary how many of these sketches I can remember verbatim despite not having seen them for 40 years. That's a sign of good comedy. Of course, being a topical UK show, many of the jokes are bound to go over the heads of people who weren't around at the time or are from overseas.

  It was called Not the Nine O Clock News as it went on air at 9pm on BBC 2 while the Nine O Clock News was on BBC 1

  Hale & Pace has a decade worth of episodes on YouTube for free, they’re really funny. Made in the 80’s and 90’s

  Smith and Jones have a lot of good stuff.   General sketches and the 'head to head' sketches.  Brilliant.   The title 'Alas Smith and Jones' was based on the fantastic western series from the 70's 'Alias Smith and Jones'  ( Originally with Pete Duel and Ben Murphy )  Sadly some are not here anymore.  Mel Smith passed  quite a few years ago.

  The sketch with the couple waiting to see Superman is interesting because  Pamela Stephenson is that sketch and she would go on to be in the movie Superman 3 she actually ends up seducing an evil Superman in that movie.

  I love that during the drinking sketch, they're playing darts in between rounds.

  That dart sketch is often cited as the single reason for why drinking was banned during Dart competitions. They didn't want the reputation of Darts being about drunken louts.

  The darts/drinking sketch has been considered one of the reasons that darts seriously fell out of favour with TV execs into the 1980s
