my step dad was on the ship and never said much about it - the skin grafts and bad lungs spoke enough

The less well known incident involving the Zuni rocket.

A testament to the determination and skill of the ships damage control parties, fight the ship!

This is two years after the Zuni rocket incident on the USS Forrestal. Maybe they should have reconsidered their use. :)

The Enterprise never got the Aegis system. The Navy replaced the original phased array radar with traditional AN/SPS-48 and AN/SPS-49 radars.

My father in law was also on the Enterprise for that cruise. They were working up on the way to Vietnam for a tour of duty.  He worked deep in the ship as a nuclear technician and electricians mate.  He lost friends in the fire, there were several between Oriskany, Forrestal, and Enterprise.

One rocket. Just shows how vulnerable a carrier can be.

My dad was stationed at Hickman between 1966 and 1969. I remember this having seen the Enterprise arrive to Pearl Harbor and it leaving for flight operations.  I heard about the fire and watched it arrive and go to drydock for repairs. I also remember the Forrestal fire as well. My High School was Aiea which had a perfect view for watching operations in Pearl Harbor.

The Enterprise and her support group came to Singapore for R&R in May 1969, and my friend, Phil Scrancher & I were lucky enough to be invited aboard. We were serving in the RAF at Tengah, & met some US sailors in the city on a Saturday at lunchtime & showed them around. So we toured the ship, & we were told of the disaster as we stood on the flight-deck just about where it happened. What was so remarkable was that there was little or no sign of any damage, so good were the repairs done only a few weeks before. We were very impressed.

My dad was on the ship. As a kid we would look at the Cruise Book at the picture’s of The Enterprise on fire, he didn’t talk to much about it. My mom’s family is from Oahu so my dad called and said the ship has to go in for repairs so come on out! I was 10 months old. I saw a show on the History channel about the explosion and asked my dad about it and he said “not much to tell”. I said I watched a whole show about it, there was a lot to tell. Years later we are on a 10 hour drive to Arizona and he told me the story. Also, my grandfather was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked.
