I had the opportunity to transfer to a school in south LA. My parents had me in private school far away. They gave me the option to choose my school for 8th grade. Tired of traffic I chose a 5 min drive. Wow. It’s not the teachers it’s “culture”. Kids are so rude. My one year there I saw bright eyed teachers wanting to make a difference just quit months into the school year. They made the substitute teachers cry, spat in their face, there were mass school fighting every week, stabbing, and standards so low it was so sad. Even I knew as a 13 year old I needed to get out or I’ll end up the same as them. Next year I signed up to be bussed 2hr away (traffic) to the valley. Back to sanity. Lesson learned.

Public high school in San Diego was nothing but a daycare center.

It’s a war zone in many classrooms today. Mainstreaming emotionally disturbed children who are violent. &nbsp; They attack teachers and students

Get back to basics and classic education. All these &quot;new&quot; programs have failed. I hired my eldest daughter&apos;s high school math teacher when &nbsp;I was &quot;in trouble&quot; trying my best to grasp the dreaded STATISTICS course essential for an advanced program. He knew right off what I was &quot;missing&apos;. He was an incredible teacher because my daughter was doing really well in math and I &nbsp;knew she had never been a math whiz. A few sessions and I was enthralled with my course. He &nbsp;was &quot;old school&quot;, passionate and took his role seriously. Best example of an effective and dedicated teacher.

I’m in another state, but I think these issues are cultural for 2025 and are countrywide. I work in a jr high. There are kids that don’t care. They get Fs and laugh about it. The don’t take notes, don’t do homework, fail the class, get moved on to the next grade. Their parents don’t make them care. I imagine some will drop out, get a crappy job and whine about raising minimum wage to a “living wage” even though they lack any skills to do anything. On the flip side, there’s an accelerated charter in my area filled with Chinese and Indian kids. Why? They value education. The parents have expectations.<br> &nbsp;I feel sorry for the kids in classes that want to learn while other kids are disruptive and disrespectful. There should be separate classes or even a different school for the kids that don’t care.

Many parents simply view school as a free babysitter. &nbsp; At our school they drop their kids off at the light in traffic in front and the kids play real-life Frogger. &nbsp;Or, parents enter the parking lot, dump, and speed out leaving incoming staff scurrying to get out of the way.

Need to get rid of rotten politicians, administrators, teachers, and kids. Don&apos;t confuse the issues.

I dont think the problem is with the teachers…..rather its the administration who arent allowed to EXPEL the worst kids who are the rotten apples in the barrel. Also , the NEW MATH is ridiculous…..

I taught high school for 31 years. &nbsp;I was a good teacher. &nbsp; How do you decide merit pay? Testing? Subjective analysis? &nbsp; If you want to use testing am I responsible for kids that are attendance problems, behavior problems or students that do nothing? How much responsibility belongs to parents? I don&apos;t know the answer. &nbsp;I do know I loved teaching and I worked hard to educate my students. &nbsp; The bureaucracy drove me out. I couldn&apos;t handle being micromanaged by people who had no idea what the classroom was about.

I would love to see this guy teach a freshmen mediocre science class in East LA for one year and see if he still feels the same.

Thanks for raising this issue. As a math educator, I see the effects of this daily, especially with students who are capable but discouraged. Strong funding matters, but systems that make it difficult to support excellence or address persistent underperformance ultimately hurt students. What changes outcomes most is consistent, high-quality teaching and a culture that values learning. Any reform that genuinely puts student growth first deserves careful consideration.
