Dr. Gero gave someone a brutal death... only to be given a brutal death by the male cyborg that later saved the Multiverse.

The gore really establishes power scaling. If the cell jr’s are wrecking the Z fighters, and get ripped apart by ssj2 Gohan, it really shows what Gohan could do to them if he wanted to.

2:13 I think this death looked more horrifying in the anime. Buu filling that guy up until his body inflated and then exploded, seemed worse than him just exploding in the manga, once he was in his body.

I guess since the Manga didn't go the disintegration route the anime did. It opened the door for the Manga in Super to show the Cell Jrs survived that brutality.

The anime was never for kids to begin with. Remember, Dragon Ball is a Shonen. Meaning it’s target demographic are primarily teenage boys (12-18). Plus Weekly Shonen Jump is confirmed, officially to be for teenage boys in both middle and high school, as confirmed by various chief editors, both past and present. Even Hiroki Goto, Soichi Aida and Hiroyuki Nakano said it best. And the 1980s was actually the pivotal decade that firmly established this. Hiroki Goto was the man who established the policy for WSJ that if a manga within the magazine doesn’t appeal to teenage boys then it will never be published. That’s why Nakano back in 2019 said that throughout its long running history, it’s works have mainly targeted teenage boys, and to this day, it remains the strong core principle they have to always keep it in mind. The anime was toned down a bit due to the television standards of the time. Even though Dragon Ball and Z aired at 7:30 to 8:30 PM at night and was allowed to be violent.

One of my many criticisms of Toyotaro is how much he holds back with this kind of stuff. Toriyama wasn't afraid to draw genuinely brutal panels that made you feel sick. The one time Toyotaro tried something similar was when Moro impaled Goku but it didn't feel right, it was as if Goku had no internal organs. Meanwhile Toriyama had more detail and visceral scenes.

The unedited Japanese version of the anime on VHS was pretty brutal.

Moro pumping his minion with more and more energy and his body slowly getting ripped apart is something I know won't go as hard in the anime if we ever get there
